Charlie Bowman and His Brothers from the hills of Tennessee to youtube. Columbia records 1st country music genre recording. Charlie was known as "the champion fiddler of East Tennessee," so named for winning more than two-dozen fiddle contests. His future credentials would include being a 2001 inductee into the North American Fiddler's Hall of Fame.He was a major recording artist, vaudeville performer, songwriter, and a member of several musical groups, including Al Hopkins and His Buckle Busters (the Hill Billies).Charlie had a talent for generating atypical sounds from his fiddle, ranging from a couple of hound dogs chasing a red fox through the Tennessee hills to a barnyard selection with cacklings from a gobbler and a bantam hen.He could play fifteen standard and several not-so-conventional instruments: brooms, saws, washtubs, thick balloons, a homemade one-string bass, and even an underfeed furnace. In 2006, a major discovery was made of the "Lost Suitcase Collection," a previously unknown cache of photos, tour memorabilia, and news stories on Charlie and the Bowman family of touring musicians

I've been a moonshiner, For seventeen long years, I've spent all my money, On whiskey and beer, I go to some hollow, And sit at my still And if whiskey dont kill me, Then I dont know what will, I go to some bar room, And drink with my friends, Where the women cant follow, And see what I spend, God bless them pretty women, I wish they was mine, Their breath is as sweet as, The dew on the vine, Let me eat when I am hungry, Let me drink when I am dry, A dollar when I am hard up, Religion when I die, The whole world's a bottle, And life's but a dram, When the bottle gets empty, It sure aint worth a damn.

White lightning. Bathtub gin. Bootleg. Hooch. Homemade liquor goes by many names, but in these parts its usually called moonshine or just shine for short. Over the years, the region has seen plenty brewed up in the thick of its hardwood forests, and plenty of famous moonshiners as well. In fact, the death of one of the regions most notable (or perhaps notorious?) moonshiners is what inspired Pittsylvania County resident Tim Smith to start the annual Moonshiner's Jamboree.

Jimmy Arnold's volcanic talent spanned instruments and genres. When he took guitar in hand for an old classic, it was like new wine in an old bottle -- at once traditional and fresh. Arnold was a native Virginian who died young, never having achieved the commercial success he deserved (a familiar story in music). His friend, the renowned bluegrass impresario Carlton Haney, says, "Jimmy never learned the money end of the business. And he broke some rules. He just loved music. He could hear it. He was one of the best." This rare footage is believed to have been taped in 1989 at a private gathering, just three years before Arnold's big heart gave out. Jimmy Arnold: 1952-1992.

This is a cover of the song Moonshiner. It is a folk song with disputed origins. It is believed that the song originated in America, then later made famous in Ireland. Others believe that it was the other way around. I first heard it on Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series Vol 1. I am playing that version. I have also heard versions of it by Uncle Tupelo and Cat Power. The light coming through on my hands was an aesthetically pleasing accident. You can check out some of my original songs at: www.myspace.com

Hi Folks, The Moonshiner is a folk song with disputed origins. It is believed that the song originated in America, then later was made famous in Ireland. Others believe that it was the other way around. The Clancy Brothers stated on their recording that the song is of Irish origin, but again, this is disputed. Delia Murphy was singing it in Ireland from the late 1930s. American country music singer Tex Ritter is famous for a song of similar tune and lyrics by the title "Jack of Diamonds" from as early as 1933. Bob Dylan recorded "Moonshiner" around 1963; this version was released on The Bootleg Series Volumes 1-3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961-1991. The song has also been performed by Elliott Smith, Cat Power, Rumbleseat, Cast Iron Filter, Railroad Earth, Bob Forrest, Roscoe Holcomb, Uncle Tupelo, Jeffrey Foucault, The Tallest Man On Earth, Jonathan Todd, The Floorbirds, and ...

The Floorbirds are an acoustic duo from Minnesota who perform haunting yet beautiful arrangements of traditional American folk songs. Daniel and Alyssa bring to the old songs a new spirit and fervor that is both innovative and contemporary yet comfortably rooted in tradition. There are many versions of this song and there have been many arguments about its origin. Some believe it began as an Irish song, as claimed by the Clancy Brothers, while others say it is American but became popular in Ireland because of the upbeat Clancy Brothers version. Alan Lomax, in "American Ballads and Folk Songs", wrote that it belongs to the "Wagoners Lad" family, and is related to songs like "On Top of Old Smokey" and "Rye Whiskey". It has been sung by Roscoe Holcomb, Bob Dylan, Uncle Uncle Tupelo, Clancy Brothers, Dan Samples and many others, with various titles such as "Moonshiner's Lament", "Moonshiner Blues" and "The Bottle Song". This was my performance in the Kyoto Exchange Student Music Festival at Kyoto Kaikan, one of the largest theatres in Japan. "Moonshiner" is a traditional song, though this particular arrangement was originally done by Bob Dylan on the Bootleg Series vol. 1

A traditional song, this arrangement is based on the version from Uncle Tupelo's album March 16-20 1992. Guitar, vocal, harp by Ernest Johnson. This song is usually done as a light-hearted celebration of the joys of liquor, but the dark side of the themes of lawbreaking, alcoholism, and immorality fits easily into the experience of growing up in the American South, and I like the more melancholy tone of this arrangement.
