The German Chancellor visited a base near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. It came a day after a US soldier killed 16 people in a rampage in the south of the country. A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force said: "ISAF offers its profound regret and deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We pledge to all the noble people of Afghanistan our commitment to a rapid and thorough investigation." The latest killings have fuelled anger over the earlier burning of copies of the Koran at a NATO base. One local man in Kandahar said: "This is a tragic incident. This should be investigated whether this is true or if he was drunk. If he did this deliberately he should be punished with death. Otherwise it will raise many questions and it will help the Taliban to benefit from this." Another said:"The people of Kandahar are very concerned and shocked about this incident. I personally feel very sad. Even I am ready to go to the side of the Taliban to fight against these foreigners." Just days before the killings, Kabul and Washington had made progress in negotiations on a an agreement that would allow American advisers to stay in Afghanistan after foreign troops leave at the end of 2014. Merkel told German soldiers in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif she couldn't say for certain that the withdrawal would take place by NATO's deadline. "It's very important for the Afghan people to know that we won't leave them completely on their own when we withdraw. We will continue the reconstruction of Afghanistan, we will continue training and I think this is a very important message," said Merkel. During the visit, the Chancellor lunched with soldiers before paying tribute to German troops that have died in Afghanistan. Germany currently has some 5000 troops serving with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday told the German parliament, the Bundestag, that she continues to oppose a common financing of government debts in the eurozone. The creation of Eurobonds "will not contribute to overcoming the crisis," she said in a speech ahead of next week EU's summit on the euro in Brussels. Merkel told representatives that she expects it will take years to solve the crisis. The German government leader also said that she opposes a more active role of the European Central Bank, the ECB. Some have suggested that the ECB buy state debts of problem countries, in order to keep interest rates of for example Italy and Spain lower than they are now. Many in Europe fear that Germany has hidden motives.
