Lawless Land - Libya

Twelve dead in weekend of Libyan skirmishing To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Gaddafi may be gone but Libya is now a country in chaos. Rebel groups are flush with weapons and taking the law into their own hands, persecuting those thought to have been allied to Gaddafi's regime. Libya's power vacuum has been filled by heavily armed rebels who still control much of the war-torn nation. Images of the sprawling refugee camps reveal the extent of the country's destroyed infrastructure. Mohammed Swehli, a commander of one of the major Misratan Rebel Brigades, denies the widespread allegations of torture and abuse. "They're not bandits, they're not militia groups", he says of the rebels. But video after video has emerged of the torture of perceived Gaddafi loyalists, most of them far too gruesome to broadcast. In some cases the brutal treatment appears to be based solely on the colour of the victim's skin. This report gained rare access to the prisons where thousands are being held indefinitely without charge. One former prisoner shows pictures of his injuries. "This is when they beat me with electric cables. They called me slave", he says. With upcoming elections and new fears over a split between the country's east and west, what does the future hold for post-revolution Libya? Bosnia to Libya: 20 years of NATO 'peacemaking'

Two decades ago saw the start of Europe's bloodiest military conflict since the Second World War. The Bosnian War and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia reignited ethnic conflicts between Muslims and Serbs. Over four years, around 100-thousand people were killed, and more than 4 million displaced. The war eventually saw NATO's first-ever peace mission in its history - setting a template for incursions into foreign troublespots. Anti-NATO activist Rick Rozoff believes the Alliance's current interventions make it hard for nations to resolve their conflict themselves. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

In Libya the interim Prime Minister has thanked the US for what he called "tremendous support"' in overthrowing Muammar Gaddafi. Tribal leaders and militia commanders in oil-rich eastern Libya have declared their intention to seek semi-autonomy, raising fears that the country might disintegrate following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi. Vandalized graves of WW II soldiers in Libya to be rebuilt

When a group of armed Libyan youth filmed themselves vandalizing graves of foreign soldiers who fought and perished in World War Two, they didn't realize the widespread uproar it would generate or how it would shame Libya's new government and Western allies. The incident, which took place in February this year, is a pivotal example of the challenges Libya faces after the ouster and subsequent death of leader Muammar Qaddafi last year. One of these challenges is controlling Islamists from imposing their ideologies, like the one that bans headstones on graves irrespective of them belonging to a Muslim or otherwise. On February 24 and 26, 249 out of 1238 graves in British military cemeteries in Benghazi were vandalized along with 119 other graves. It appeared that graves of predominantly Australian and British soldiers were targeted by vandals. Many shrines across the country have also been vandalized since Qaddafi's ouster. However, plans are now afoot to rebuild the vandalized graves in the ruined cemetery and have them ready by September, well in time for Memorial Day in November says Drgan Bozic, the Commonwealth War Graves spokesperson in Libya. He also pointed out that security around gravesites has been weak but security personnel complain that they are ill-equipped to do their jobs properly. Libya Update - Partial - Jan 30 2012

The following is my latest updates from Tripoli, Libya. The situation in Bani Walid remains good (stable). BW is in the hands of the Warfalla Tribe, this is the largest tribe in Libya their home base is Bani Walid. Yesterday, they sent a number of police to BW, not rebel militia but police. My source seemed to think that this was a good thing. All the tribes have home areas that they are from but Libyan move around Libya and live anywhere in the country. I am told that the rebels, those who [intended to] control Libya by force, now have a huge fear of the Bani Walid (Warfalla) people. When the incident occurred where the rebels inside Bani Walid were so unreasonable that the tribal leaders took them out of control, the rest of the country was put under alert. Hundreds of check points were set up and all people who were or were suspected to be Warfalla were stopped, searched and basically harassed. Misurata was one of the most lit up areas, for a reason, these rebels in Misurata have done so much wrong that they live in fear. You know of course that Doctors without Borders, and Amnesty International are leaving Libya because of the continued torture and death of innocent Libyans. Next, electricity is on and off every day in Tripoli. Food in Tripoli is VERY expensive, this is a shock for the people of Libya who are used to living in an environment of subsidized food, fuel, energy, etc. The NTC has done nothing to bring about stability for the people of Libya. Libyan oil chief's body repatriated

The body of former Libyan oil chief, Shokir Ghanem, has been repatriated to Libya's capital, Tripoli on Thursday. Ghanem, former oil chief of Libyan strongman Muammar Qaddafi, fled Libya to Austria after defecting last year. His body was found floating in the Danube river in Vienna on Sunday. Austrian police say investigations show no evidence of foul play in the death of former oil industry official. "On Sunday morning at about 8:40 AM a passer-by found a dead body in the river, about 20 meters from the bank, here on the Danube, close to the Danube Island. Police were called immediately, they pulled out the body, and there was no hint of a third party's fault. Shortly after that he was identified as the former Prime Minister and oil minister of Libya," Austrian police spokesman Roman Haslinger told members of the media on the shores of the Danube. Vienna police said the corpse exhibited no signs of violence, there was no evidence of foul play or suicide. However, Ghanem is thought to have enemies among Qaddafi's opponents because of his time under power, and between Qaddafi's friends and family following his decision to defect. Ghanem, 69 when he died, had been chairman of Libya's state-owned National Oil Corporation (NOC) between 2006 and 2011, before defecting in March last year following the rise against the former Libyan leader Qaddafi.
