Lena Horne - Stormy Weather (1943)

Here's the full version of a performance that can be found truncated elsewhere on YouTube -- from the 1943 film of the same name, the great Lena Horne delivers a sizzling performance of her signature song. (I wish I had the full dance that follows it, which includes some amazing ballet. If anyone has a full-length version, please post it or get in touch with me!)

LENA HORNE

Lena Calhoun Horne (1917 - 2010) Actress / Singer, 1940s through present-day Lena Horne was born Lena Calhoun Horne on June 30, 1917, in Brooklyn. Her mother, Edna, had an extremely fair complexion, and the hospital staff thought she was Caucasian. Her father, Teddy, wasn't there at her birth -- he was out gambling to win enough money to pay the hospital bill. Her mother pushed Lena into showbiz -- Edna got her hired at age 16 as a chorus girl at Harlem's Cotton Club. Lena had to quit school and become the family breadwinner with a salary of just $25 weekly. She married Lewis Jones young and by age 20 already had a daughter. Soon after she gave birth to a son, Teddy, who died of kidney failure in 1971. In 1938, Lena was given one of the leads (Ethel) in The Duke is Tops at the suggestion of an agent who had seen her at the Cotton Club. She moved to Hollywood after her divorce from Lewis and was soon discovered by MGM. Lena stipulated in her contract that she would not get sterotypical black roles. In fact, MGM wanted her to look even darker on screen, so Max Factor invented "Little Egyptian" makeup for Lena to serve that purpose. Lena's first MGM role was as an uncredited nightclub singer in the 1942 Ann Sothern musical Panama Hattie. Some people believe Lena's segment to be the only bright spot in the picture. This appearence went over well, and so MGM gave her a spot in a big all-star revue, Thousands Cheer. There she sang one of her most famous movie numbers ...

Lena Horne - Love - Black Entertainment

This is a rare performance of Lena Horne from an MGM movie from the 1940's. The gorgeous, great Lena Horne gives a wonderful performance, but also notice the other black women in this part. They were too actresses aspiring to make it, but was reduced to bit parts and maid parts or dancing parts, because Hollywood wasn't ready to make black women glamour girls, of course Lena Horne was the only one Hollywood was willing to let be a star, but only in a limited way. Some of the other black actresses in this scene is the beautiful Suzette Harbin who is flirting with another woman's man, she appeared in many films, and was a fine actress. The other woman who jumped on Suzette was, Marie Bryant, a dance director in Hollywood, dancer, and singer, and good friend of Lena's, Vivian Dandridge, sister of Dorothy Dandridge is in this scene, and a dancer by the name of Cleo Herndon. These women were the black glamour girls of Hollywood, that we shouldn't forget. They helped in making the movies Lena Horne starred in successful with their dancing and beauty as well, and we need to remember them too. The women in this part were also in Cabin In The Sky and Stormy Weather, and most of Lena's movies. They helped in opening the doors as well.

Lena Horne: A Celebration of her Life & Career

MODA Entertainment extends our condolences to Lena Hornes family. Lena Horne was an extraordinary person and talent. In honor of Ms. Hornes passing on May 9th, 2010 we welcome you to listen to an interview with her daughter Gail Buckley. The interview on her mother gives insight into the witty, sharp and insightful Lena Horne who we will forever treasure. Listen to the interview at: iconsradio.com Kerry Washington Naomie Harris Sanaa Lathan Angela Bassett Hallie Berry ... Kimberly Elise To name but a few current actresses. Each talented. Attractive. Successful. And black. Not so many years ago, fewer perhaps than wed care to think, this many women of color dominating movie screens would have been unheard of. Not just unheard of. In fact, impossible. Consider Lena Horne. When this extraordinarily talented singer, actress was signed by MGM in the early 1940s, her future must have looked bright, indeed. Here she was, being directed by the likes of Vincente Minnelli. Appearing in films opposite Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Cyd Charisse. But she was also black. And therein lies a story Which Lena Hornes daughter, Gail Buckley, discusses in depth on ICONS Radio Hour. Ms. Buckley explores her mothers career, from her early days at The Cotton Club to all-black films in the late thirties and her years at MGM in the forties. Did we forget to mention the House Un-American Activities Committee? Gail Buckley doesnt. Nor does she forget Humphrey Bogarts ...

Lena Horne Tribute

Here is a dynamic song performed by the legendary Lena Horne. Born in 1917 (in Brooklyn, New York) and still active, Lena Horne is a pioneer among African-American performers who had the talent and beauty to crack the race barrier in Hollywood. A smooth singer of bluesy ballads, a silky-voiced chanteuse whose glamorously icy exterior made a marvelous contrast with the inner fire of her sultry, often fierce singing style, Horne appeared onstage in Harlem when she was only 14 years old, and by age 16 she was singing in the famous Cotton Club. Eventually she made her way into films, starring in the popular 1943 musicals "Stormy Weather" (with the tap-dancing duo The Nicholas Brothers), "Cabin in the Sky" (with jazz legend Louis Armstrong) and the 1948 musical "Words and music", where she sang the memorable "The Lady Is a Tramp". Possibly because of her close friendship with actor-singer Paul Robeson (who had leftist affiliations), Horne was blacklisted for a time in the early 1950's. It would not be until 1969 that Horne would again have an acting role in a film, the modest "Death of a Gunfighter" (1969), in which she played Richard Widmark's mistress. In later years she kept busy onstage and in nightclub work and enjoyed a long-running smash success with a galvanizing one-woman show on Broadway, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" (1981-82). Horne's active career spanned six decades, and in 1989 she was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Listen to Lena's powerful ...

Now! (1965)

Using morgue photos, newsreel footage, and an amazing (if slightly over-arranged) recording by Lena Horne, Cuban filmmaker Santiago Alvarez fired off 'Now!', one of the most powerful bursts of propaganda rendered in the 1960s. Not intended as a work of great subtlety, Alvarez wields other people's images with perhaps more artistry than those who created them, and builds a remarkable piece of rhetorical cinema in the process. It's target -- the then-current racial conflagration in the United States -- is an easy one. But it is perhaps this very fact that most fuels the scorn and rage in the marrow of this film. If there was any room for nuance, he might have gone a little easier. 'Now!' is strident, yes; but breathtaking. Tom Sutpen
