Authors@Google: Julie Burstein & Kurt Andersen, "Spark: How Creativity Works"

Public Radio International's Julie Burstein, creator of the award-winning program Studio 360, along with its host Kurt Andersen, offers a rare, fascinating glimpse into some of the 21st century's greatest creative minds—from Yo-Yo Ma and Robert Plant to Mira Nair and Chuck Close, to David Milch and Joyce Carol Oates, to Rosanne Cash and beyond. Fans of Malcolm Gladwell's Outliers, Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind, Rosamund Zander's The Art of Possibility, and Lynda Barry's What It Is will be enthralled and electrified by this unique look at the creative process of the world's most talented and prolific artists. Creativity is an elusive subject. We enjoy its fruits—movies, novels, paintings, songs—but rarely are we privy to what happens in the creative process. In Spark, Julie Burstein traces the roots of some of the twenty-first century's most influential and creative thinkers, including Joyce Carol Oates, Yo-Yo Ma, David Milch, Isabel Allende, and Joshua Redman. Burstein pulls back the curtain to reveal the sources of these artists' inspiration and the processes that bring their work into being. "These artists may not change lead into gold," Burstein writes, "but they lift materials from their familiar contexts, combining, reshaping, transforming them into works of art that change the way we see the world." Spark is an invaluable resource for the aspiring writer and artist, but the need for creativity extends well beyond the world of paintbrushes and typewriters ...

TEDxBrooklyn - Richard Saul Wurman and Kurt Andersen - Part 1

Spurred by the dance between his curiosity and ignorance, Richard Saul Wurman has sought ways to make the complex clear. He has now written, designed and published 82 books on topics ranging from football to health care to city guides, but he likes to say that they all spring from the same place - his ignorance. Described by Fortune magazine as an "intellectual hedonist with a hummingbird mind," Wurman has been shaped by an epiphany he had as a young man: ignorance and embracing the understanding of what it is like to not understand. Wurman created the TED conference in 1984, bringing together many of America's clearest thinkers in the fields of technology, entertainment and design. He continues to co-chair the annual TEDMED meetings. Kurt Andersen is the author of two novels, the critically acclaimed bestsellers Heyday and Turn of the Century, as well as short fiction, screenplays and work for the theater. His latest book is nonfiction, an essay called Reset, and his next novel will be published in 2012. He is also host and co-creator of the Peabody award-winning public radio program Studio 360, co-founder of Very Short List, and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair and New York magazines. Previously, he co-founded Spy magazine, and served as editor-in-chief of New York. He has also been a columnist and critic for The New Yorker and Time. New York Magazine's Kurt Andersen appears on "Reliable Sources" to plug his new book, "Reset," in which he wrote about what he calls "kind of crypto-racist feelings" and "Glenn Beck nuttiness" in the wake of the inauguration of Barack Obama. "People like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Keith Olbermann, are invested in a certain kind of anger," he said. He further comments on why Beck's "nuttiness" caused sponsors to commit not to advertise on his TV show in the wake of his saying Obama is "a racist."

Studio 360: Laura Cantrell performs "I Don't Claim to Be an Angel"

Kitty Wells' 1950s and 60s country music tunes still surprise unsuspecting listeners. She wore demure gingham dresses and sang sweet plaintive melodies, but Wells was a radical. Some of her songs all but declare infidelity and promiscuousness: "I don't claim to be an angel, my life's been full of sin." "I Don't Claim to Be an Angel" wasn't the first time those issues had been broached in country music, but Wells made hits. The Grand Ole Opry tried to ban the song, but, as Laura Cantrell tells Kurt Andersen, "the horse was out of the barn." Wells revolutionized what a woman could sing about and paved the way for Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette a generation later. Cantrell's new record, "Kitty Wells Dresses," is a top-to-bottom tribute. She performs "I Don't Claim to Be an Angel," from the album with her band: Jon Grabof, Kenny Kosek, Jeremy Chatzky, and Mark Spencer. Studio 360: Robert Lopez peforms "I Believe" from "The Book of Mormon"

Trey Parker and Matt Stone's new Broadway musical "The Book of Mormon," follows an odd-couple of missionaries who are sent to save Uganda. As you'd expect from the "South Park" creators, it's got tons of profanity and shockingly vile jokes. But it also mixes the snark with sweetness, matching the signature style of "Mormon's" composer and co-creator Robert Lopez, who was also behind the long-running hit "Avenue Q." Lopez sat down at the piano to show Kurt Andersen what makes "Mormon" tick, and performed "I Believe," from the show. To listen to our full interview with Robert Lopez, visit: www.studio360.org
