Tsambasin - Nikos Xanthopoulos Pontiaka Serra Karadeniz

Nikos Xanthopoulos sings "Tsambasin" and then they dance "Serra" from a old B&W movie. The title is "H ODYSSEIA ENOS KSERIZOMENOU" (Thanks DIMITRIUS76) In the movie he finds his lost father after the "exhcange" of population with Greece - Turkey of the Pontians of the Black Sea (Karadeniz) region 1922. The Song is as Follows: The Tsambasin has been burnt (the summer retreat -holiday area above Ordu) And only the walls remain And they have fallen to the searching Orndu's Strong men (lol) Oh mother it has burnt Ordu's Fields and there is nothing left Only the Ash Crying are Gods small Birds They are crying like eyes of water wells??? Tsamlouk is crying so is Karakiol The beautiful pine trees are crying as well.. The Tsambasin has burnt No houses will be left Big and small (young -- Old) poor - rich Every sits and weeps

Ordu - Kotiora -Pontos - Karadeniz -Black Sea

Ordu is situated on the Black Sea shore of Pontos (todays Northern Turkey). The Original name was Kotiora which was named after a fortress of a Paphlagonian King called Kotis, ora is the word for "Fortress of". Ordu is the Turkish word for military and was given later from a Turkish military base created nearby. The music is from the Song Tsambasin which mentions the burning of the Tsambasin, found 40klm from Ordu and was the favored summer retreat for the locals. You will notice the Church of Ipapandis (Tasbasi Church) at the start of the video, we were told it had the "best acoustics" and they put it to the test, the sound is magnificent. The church was built in the middle of the 19th Century in white stones. It has been restored by the department of culture and is now used as a culture center. Many of the old buildings stand as they did when many Pontians had left them in the 1920's. We got to enjoy fresh fish at a restaurant on the pier over the Black Sea. Ordu is were my Fathers Grandparents were from so it meant allot to me to visit this area. 50klm from Ordu you sill also find the village of St.Andonis were "Sano Halo" originated, from the book of Thea Halo "Not even My name".

Movie "Waiting For the Clouds" Trailer - Tamama - Karadeniz

WAITING FOR THE CLOUDS begins while the census clerks arrive early one morning into the small port town of Trebolu. The streets remain empty and silent. Not everyone can afford to be counted. Questions about one's past can open up too many wounds. Ayse lives with her older and ailing sister Selma. Ayse, who never married, has dedicated her life to Selma since she became a widow many years ago. Their years of co-habitation have created an intense bond between the two sisters. Ayse must now face the harsh reality that she will soon be alone. The mystery of Ayse's tragic past will be divulged through the curious eyes of a charming eight-year-old boy, Mehmet, who shares Ayse's profound loss at the death of Selma. Ayse's tragedy begins as the unfortunate outcome of historical events: World War I and the fall of the Ottoman Empire brought about new nationalist waves in Turkey, thus creating great tensions and conflicts between Greeks and Turks in the Black Sea region. Waiting For The Glouds makes reference to the human pain of a nearly-forgotten historic incident. In the winter of 1916, the Ottoman Army evacuated the villages west of the recently Russian-occupied Trabzon. In what can be considered to be no less than ethnic cleansing operations, the Greek residents of several villages were pushed out of their homes in an unorganized and paranoid deportation effort. Ayse's real identity is that of Eleni, the daughter of one of the evacuated Greek families. When she was 10 years ...

Bafra region, Karadeniz, Pontos 1997

Bafra is found in the west of Pontus (a district of Samsun Province) on the shores of the Black sea in todays Turkey. Bafra is a very touchy region for the Pontians b/c of the blood filled history and it is the reason it is more dominent "Turkish" then mixed with others, you will not find any Rum (Pontian) speaking inhabitance and some say their is a negative vibe towards the Greeks.... In the video we are welcomed by a local village and their dance group, along with traditional Zourna and Daoul. We were met by the local mayor and given a great dinner. We also get a chance to dance together, I noticed they enjoy the "embropis" style of dance in this region (we sometimes call it Lahana). After that we set of down the river (which is Damed and made much bigger then it was) and you cannot help but to notice the old "Persian" tradition of tombs in the walls and the large caves. We stop at a large cave opening which has much historic significance... In this cave many men fought against the Sultan, who battered it days, he even brang in cannons, for almost a week. At the end, the men who hadn't lost their lives saved the last bullet for themselves. Entering the cave the Sultans men started to destroy the cave and noticed a draft coming from behind a icon of the virgin Mary, what they discovered was a tunnel that led all the way to the other side (this is pointed out in the video)... there they found all the village women and children who were deported to Samsun. Heroic Santa Pontos Karadeniz Heaven 1997

Heroic Santa Region of Pontos (black Sea/ Karadeniz) about 50klm south of Trabzon and 600 meters above sea level (just behind the mountains of Sumela). Santa (pronounced Sanda) region consists of about 7 villages. Each with their main church. This video was taken on my 1997 trip to the region with author George Andreadis tour. We are in the larger village of "Pistofandon" you latter see the village of the opposite mountain "Zournazandon". The locals welcomed us and gave us tea "Tsai" and Cheese (Salted & unsalted) so nice. In the tradition of the Santetes the shop owner carried a loaded pistol !!!!! :0 The music is the song of Capt. Efklidis who's heroic efforts saw that no Turkish troops stepped foot into the region (you will also notice the narrow entrance/path at the end of the video - like Thermopile). He was never killed and when he was finally captured he was set free under the "exchange" agreement and sent to Greece. Ironically (as the song says) he would not die under a ottoman knife but he fell under his horse & carriage and was found dead (he was celebrating the birth of his new son in Greece)!!! In the video you see the now priest of Sumela in Greece father Pavlos hold a memorial service and says afew words in memory of the inhabitance, also munk Makarios from Mt.Olympus and Vasilis Fotiadis (brother of Prof Kost Fotiadis) who is caretaker of Sumela in Greece. You will even notice the "Parhare" winter and summer houses on the top of the Mountains (which are ...
