(Conway) Joni was the girl who lived next door I've known her I guess ten years or more Joni wrote me a note one day And this is what she had to say. (Joni) ''Jimmy, please say you'll wait for me I'll grow up someday you'll see Saving all my kisses just for you Signed with love forever true.'' (Conway) Slowly I read her note once more Then I went over to the house next door Her tear drops fell like rain that day When I told Joni what I had to say. (All) ''Joni, Joni please don't cry You'll forget me by and by You're just fifteen, I'm twenty two And Joni, I just cant wait for you.'' (Conway) Soon I left our little home town Got me a job and tried to settle down But these words kept haunting my memory The words that Joni said to me. (Joni) ''Jimmy please say you'll wait for me I'll grow up some day you'll see Saving all my kisses just for you Signed with love forever true.'' (Conway) I packed my clothes and I caught a plane I had to see Joni, I had to explain How my heart was filled with her memory And ask my Joni if she'd marry me <b>...</b>

Joni Mitchell-A Case of You

Just before our love got lost you said I am as constant as a northern star And I said, constant in the darkness Wheres that at? If you want me Ill be in the bar On the back of a cartoon coaster In the blue tv screen light I drew a map of canada Oh canada And your face sketched on it twice Oh you are in my blood like holy wine Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you I could drink a case of you darling And I would still be on my feet Oh Id still be on my feet Oh I am a lonely painter I live in a box of paints Im frightened by the devil And Im drawn to those ones that aint afraid I remember that time that you told me, you said Love is touching souls Surely you touched mine Cause part of you pours out of me In these lines from time to time Oh you are in my blood like holy wine And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you I could drink a case of you darling Still Id be on my feet And still be on my feet I met a woman She had a mouth like yours She knew your life She knew your devils and your deeds And she said Color go to him, stay with him if you can Oh but be prepared to bleed Oh but you are in my blood youre my holy wine Oh and you taste so bitter, bitter and so sweet Oh I could drink a case of you darling Still Id be on my feet Id still be on my feet

Joni talks about something more precious than just living in a physical body. Matthew 18:8-9 "If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell."

Joni's Mitchell title "Both Sides Now" from her "Both Sides Now" album. All rights reserved to WMG or Sony & to Joni Mitchell. ⇓⇓⇓ LYRICS ⇓⇓⇓ Bows and flows of angel hair an ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere, i've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done but clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions i recall I really don't know clouds,... at all. Moons and junes and ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way that you feel As every fairy tale comes real; I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show an you leave 'em laughing when you go And if you can't, don't let them know, don't give yourself away. I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take, and still somehow It's love's illusions that I recall I really don't know love, really don't know love at all. Tears and fears and feeling proud,... to say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and Circus crowds, i've looked at life that way But now old friends are acting strange, they shake their heads, And they told him that I've changed Something's lost but something's gained in the living every day. I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose, and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life,... at all. Joni Mitchell Speaks About Jimi Hendrix

I've seen a shorter version of this interview in the past, but I just ran across this one and it's about twice as long. Joni is speaking about how Jimi recorded one of her shows in Ottawa, Canada. (Maybe the same night Jimi's Ottawa show was recorded. I've heard rumors that Jimi may have recorded his own Ottawa show) She also mentions how Jimi was concerned about moving on, from his Stage image as a wild performer to a more serious musician. I don't know exactly when this was recorded, but I'm assuming it's the early '70's,

Joni Mitchell : A Case Of You

Joni Mitchell's work has broadened the possibilities for songwriters, erased the borders of what an individual artist can accomplish. Only a few artists have reshaped the awareness of what one person's work can become. Joni has also, with her guitar tunings, opened up musical adventures for so many. I've noticed over the years that a lot of female artists mention Joni as an inspiration, a path finder. She is also a fine painter. This particular song, 'A Case Of You', from the 'Blue' album, is full of feeling, longing, sadness and humour. You can hear it so many ways. I first heard the song on the album, then a few weeks later at the Amchitka benefit concert for Greenpeace where Joni was joined by James Taylor. It's wonderful. Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

September 3, 1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full show: thesixtiesarchive.blogspot.com "Big Yellow Taxi" is a song written and originally performed by Joni Mitchell. It reached #67 in 1970 (US, Billboard) Mitchell got the idea for the song during a visit to Hawaii. She looked out of her hotel window at the spectacular Pacific mountain scenery, and then down to a parking lot. Joni said this about writing the song to journalist Alan McDougall in the early 1970s: " I wrote 'Big Yellow Taxi' on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart... this blight on paradise. That's when I sat down and wrote the song. " The song is known for its environmental statement (from the lyrics "Paved paradise to put up a parking lot", "Hey farmer, farmer, put away that DDT now") and sentimental sound. The line, "Took all the trees, put 'em in a tree museum/And charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em" refers to Foster Botanical Garden in downtown Honolulu, which is a living museum of tropical plants, some rare and endangered. In the song's final verse, the political gives way to the personal. Mitchell recounts the departure of her "old man" in the titular "big yellow taxi", referring to the old Metro Toronto Police patrol cars that until 1986 were painted <b>...</b>

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides, Now

September 3, 1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full show: thesixtiesarchive.blogspot.com "Both Sides, Now" is a single by Joni Mitchell. Her recording first appeared on the album Clouds, released in 1969. She re-recorded the song in a Jazz style for the album of the same name, released in 2000. It is one of Joni Mitchell's best-known songs (with "Big Yellow Taxi," "Woodstock," and "A Case of You"). It was written in March 1967, inspired by a passage in Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow. Judy Collins made the first commercially released recording of the song in 1968, shortly after Mitchell wrote it, which reached #8 on the US pop singles charts and won a 1968 Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance. The record peaked at #3 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey, and has become one of Collins' signature songs. Fairport Convention recorded the song as a demo in 1967. The band's recording did not become available until 2000, however, when it appeared on The Guv'nor Vol 4 by Ashley Hutchings. (A live recording featuring Judy Dyble from 1981 is included on Fairport's Moat on the Ledge album.) Both Joni Mitchell's album Both Sides Now and a 2003 Mitchell rerecording of the song are featured in the 2003 movie Love Actually. Rolling Stone ranked "Both Sides, Now" #170 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was published by Scholastic as a picture book, Both Sides Now, illustrated by Alan Baker, in 1992 (ocm24629360). Cover versions The 1960s * Mitchell's friend <b>...</b>

Joni Mitchell - All I Want

September 3, 1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full show: thesixtiesarchive.blogspot.com The Appalachian dulcimer (or mountain dulcimer) is a fretted string instrument of the zither family, typically with three or four strings. It is native to the Appalachian region of the United States. The body extends the length of the fingerboard, and its fretting is generally diatonic. In 1979 Mitchell reflected, "The Blue album, there's hardly a dishonest note in the vocals. At that period of my life, I had no personal defenses. I felt like a cellophane wrapper on a pack of cigarettes. I felt like I had absolutely no secrets from the world and I couldn't pretend in my life to be strong. Or to be happy. But the advantage of it in the music was that there were no defenses there either." The album was influenced by jazz, particularly the music of Miles Davis. Mitchell used alternative tunings on her guitar to allow easier access to augmented chords and notes in unexpected combinations. * In 2003, Blue was ranked #30 on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, the highest placement for a female artist * In 2000, Blue won the top spot in Chart's '50 Greatest Canadian Albums of All Time' (Blue was third place in 1996 and 2005) * In 2007, Blue was ranked second in Bob Mersereau's book The Top 100 Canadian Albums, behind Neil Young's Harvest (which was the second-place finisher in all three Chart polls) * In 2001, Blue was ranked #14 on VH1's list of the '100 <b>...</b>

Joni Mitchell - California

September 3, 1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full show: thesixtiesarchive.blogspot.com While some of Mitchell's most popular songs were written on piano, almost every song she composed on the guitar uses an open, or non-standard, tuning; she has written songs in some 50 different tunings, which she has referred to as "Joni's weird chords." The use of alternative tunings allows more varied and complex harmonies to be produced on the guitar, without the need for difficult chord shapes. Indeed, many of Joni's guitar songs use very simple chord shapes, but her use of alternative tunings and a highly rhythmic picking/strumming style creates a rich and unique guitar sound. Her right-hand picking/strumming technique has evolved over the years from an initially intricate picking style, typified by the guitar songs on her first album, to a looser and more rhythmic style, sometimes incorporating percussive "slaps", that have been featured on later albums. In 1995, Mitchell's friend Fred Walecki, proprietor of Westwood Music in Los Angeles, developed a solution to alleviate her continuing frustration with using multiple alternate tunings in live settings. Walecki designed a Stratocaster-style guitar to function with the Roland VG-8 (Virtual Guitar), a system capable of configuring her numerous tunings electronically. While the guitar itself remained in standard tuning, the VG-8 encoded the pickup signals into digital signals which were then translated into the altered tunings. This <b>...</b>

Joni Mitchell - Woodstock

September 3, 1970 www.amazon.com Watch the full show: thesixtiesarchive.blogspot.com "Woodstock" is a song about the Woodstock Music and Art Festival of 1969. Joni Mitchell wrote the song from what she had heard from then-boyfriend, Graham Nash, about the festival. She had not been there herself, since she was told it would be more advantageous to appear on The Dick Cavett Show by a manager. She wrote this song in a hotel room in New York City, watching the reports of the Festival on television. "The deprivation of not being able to go provided me with an intense angle on Woodstock," she told an interviewer shortly after the event. It was later released on her third album, Ladies of the Canyon in 1970, on her Shadows and Light album, and again in 1996 on her Hits album. Mitchell's original version featured a stark and haunting arrangement - solo vocal, multi-tracked backing vocals and tremoloed Wurlitzer electric piano all performed by Mitchell herself. All subsequent recordings featured a fuller backing band sound. Prior to release on any album, Mitchell performed "Woodstock" at the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival, one month after Woodstock. The solo performance can be seen in the festival concert film Celebration at Big Sur (released in 1971). The performance was an exception to Mitchell's mounting distaste for large festival gigs. The song later went on to be hits for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young and Matthews Southern Comfort, the latter reaching #1 on the UK singles <b>...</b>
