In a rare show of unity, the leaders of Pakistan's many political parties are expected to meet on Thursday for an All Party Conference. It follows comments from United States that accused the nation's top intelligence agency of having links with the Pakistani-based Haqqani network. Pakistan has hit back at US allegations that ISI supports the Haqqani militant group fighting coalition troops in Afghanistan. Besides denying the terror links, the Pak Government and the army went into a tizzy over it. The Pakistan Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani called for an all party meeting while the army chief held a 6 hour meeting on possible US strikes in the North West. Sufi Sheikh Muhammad Nazim Al Haqqani claims "the pen has been lifted" and since the age of 80 hes no longer accountable for sin, and may swear freely and that its a sign of his "sainthood" ( wilaya ) His Arabic is very weak (broken) to begin with, and therefore hard to understand. The way he speaks in an unclear manner at such an age, adds to this and makes it even harder. Although translation was a challenge and the video had to be listened to over 20 times, one can understand what is said very clearly. What he says also, is certainly nothing new to the Sufi culture, or his writings. Such statements have been recorded by many, many Sufis throughout history, so I see it as an extension of a very old concept. Its just interesting to see, on video, someone actually saying it, as opposed to reading about it in a book. Whats also interesting is the idea of a Sufi Master swearing, while Sufism is supposed to be about purifying the soul etc and all that good stuff. However, again, going back to Sufi writings from the past centuries, im not surprised at all. It seems to me that theres just beautiful sounding concepts on the outside, but once you get deeper into it, you get to see the darker side. If you do not question, think, or ask questions, then maybe you'd get promoted a rank or two. Then some get to the point where they learn "secrets" they arent supposed to share with the general public, and become higher in rank and maybe lead a Sufi order, keeping those "secrets" away <b>...</b>

The US has been putting unprecedented diplomatic pressure on Pakistan to sever ties with militant groups operating in Pakistan ever since the September 13th terrorist attacks on NATO and American targets in Kabul. Yesterday Admiral Mike Mullen called the Haqqani Network a "veritable arm" of Pakistan's intelligence agency. Pakistan has been denying the charges. Speaking to VOA, Pakistan's Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan said that Pakistan has never done anything to compromise peace and stability in Afghanistan. Pakistan often says that it does not have the resources for an operation in N. Waziristan where the Haqqani Network is based. But Thomas Lynch of the National Defense University says that the US is asking simply that Pakistan's government take some sort of action to address the militants. Sebastian Gorkha who also teaches as the NDU, says the American public and government are now getting weary of this 10-year war, which why such tremendous pressure is coming to bear.

Rumi Forum Presented "Pakistan and the US: Partners in Combating Terrorism" with HE Ambassador Husain Haqqani of The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Ambassador Haqqani started off with a determination of "Three Critical Transformations Pakistan is going through," and went into Pakistan's expectations from the United States. Furthermore, he explained that this would only work if the bond between the US and Pakistan was a partnership and not a transaction. Mr. Haqqani explained that Pakistan was transforming from an authoritarian culture to a democratic culture. He went on to explain that Pakistan has an overall culture of militancy and militarism which defines the national identity. However, he notes that this actually challenges the state and weakens it; it does not strengthen it as it was so believed before. He believes that Pakistan needs to be economically and politically strong which will come mainly through education. Thus, Pakistan needs to transform from a country of militancy and militarism to a country of entrepreneurship and modernity. Finally, His Excellency notes that Pakistan must go from the "Crossroads of Conflict" to the "Crossroads of Opportunity."
