Meanwhile Trailer - A New Film By Hal Hartley

On DVD in March 2012, Hal Hartley's new film Meanwhile concerns Joe Fulton, a man who can do anything from fixing your sink to arranging international financing for a construction project. He produces online advertising and he's written a big fat novel. He's also a pretty good drummer. But success eludes him. For Joe can't keep himself from fixing other people's problems. His own ambitions are constantly interrupted by his willingness and ability to go out of his way for others.
Sundance:Hal Hartley - FAY GRIM - Getting HENRY FOOL'd

more Sundance @ www.zoom-in.com Unfortunately, Hal Hartley left Sundance before the press screening of FAY GRIM, and I wasn't able to interview him without seeing the film first. So my questions are on the generic side. I worked with Hal three times as a publicist, on AMATEUR, FLIRT, and HENRY FOOL. FAY GRIM is the sequel to HENRY FOOL, and picks up the same characters years later. It was fun to see some of my old friends turn up in the film, particularly Thomas Jay Ryan, who plays Henry Fool (and starred in a short I did) and Elina Lowensohn.. So much has changed over the years. Parker is now a movie star. I remember the night I first met her. I had arranged for Hal to do one of those online chats with film fans. As Hal was computer illiterate at the time, we went over to Parker's apartment and she did the typing for him. After the fans found out who was at the keyboard, a lot of them lost interest in Hal. I remember what a nice hostess she was, bringing drinks, etc. She told me she had to go to a shoot that night after midnight. It was clear there was no money in it. "I just want to keep making movies," she said. I love the comic persona that Parker has in the Chris Guest movies, but it's beautiful to see the deeper dimension that she is able to pull out when she stands on Hal's stage. James Urbaniak and Tom Ryan made their film debuts in HENRY FOOL. Now they are veteran film actors with numerous credits. Among many other films, James played Robert Crumb in AMERICAN ...

Hal Hartley's Surviving Desire (Trailer)

"Surviving Desire" isEXCLUSIVELY DISTRIBUTED by Microcinema DVD. To order this DVD and/or other Microcinema titles, go to: www.microcinemadvd.com. SURVIVING DESIRE (1991, 53 min) is a comedy about obsessive love from the director Time Magazine called the smartest new outlaw in the movies. SURVIVING DESIRE is a bold and playful little tale about a handsome young college professor smitten with a beautiful young female student. It is a swift dissection of male infatuation that is as fierce as it is compassionate. Special Features: THEORY OF ACHIEVEMENT (1991, 17 min) and AMBITION (1991, 9 min) are short story-essays about the everyday perils of finding ones place in the world; made—for the most part—with the filmmakers actual friends as he himself negotiated the bewildering pathways of success and recognition. UPON REFLECTION: SURVIVING DESIRE (2005, 11 min) is part of a collection of interview films with Hartley and his collaborators. It includes candid talks with Hartley, producer Ted Hope, and actor Martin Donovan. Diabolically inventive and hilariously non-naturalistic, these films led THE NEW YORK TIMES to admit Hartley is one of the most industrious and least compromising young artists in America. As he sets out to borrow a friend's car in order to take Emily to the airport, he investigates what he considers to be the only remaining romantic possibility in his life -- a married woman named Margaret. In trying to save Walter from himself, Bill winds up getting shot in the face, and after a few excruciating hours in the hospital he rushes to the airport. While in Berlin... Dwight is a precocious young American who lives with Johan, an older German art dealer. Johan is flying to New York on business for three months and demands to know, before he leaves, whether their relationship has a future. MisterEsoteric asks Hal Hartley: "What were you Thinking?"

Henry Fool is one of the most unique, original, and sophisticated films to be made in the last 30 years. It dares to explore the creative process, friendship, loyalty, wit, lust, subversion, faith, ego, fear, trends and social taboos in an articulate and unprecidented way. When Hal Hartley ushered in his 1998 masterpiece, his voice was finally one to be reckoned with. Henry Fool himself, a staggeringly great performance by Thomas Jay Ryan, left an indelable mark on the veiwer, as did all the other memorable characters. The film quickly developed a cult following among actors, writers and independent filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts everywhere. So, when Hal produced "Fay Grim" in 2007, a highly anticipated sequel to Henry Fool, his loyal fanbase was elated... ...But- many were very disapointed to see the sequel to such an original film take the form of a standard spy thriller movie. Here, MisterEsoteric, on a stroll through Battery Park in Manhattan, challenges his idol Hal as to WHY he betrayed his fans and followed HF with something so pedestrian. Not that Fay Grim was awful...Indeed, it has a lot of great moments, and it is truly wonderful to see all the old gang from Henry Fool Land again, Especially Parker Posey, who carries the whole movie herself quite competently. -But, what bothers MisterEsoteric (and most of Hal Hartley's rabid HF fans) as a whole, is that the film re-imagines the original premise of Henry being the ultimate Bullshit artist and re-invents him as ...
