Garden Girl TV: Vertical Gardening One(How to Grow Vertically)

Patti Moreno, the Garden Girl, shows you techniques to get more out of limited landspace, by growing up. Read the companion article on Vertical Gardening with Cucumbers: www.gardengirltv.com Check out her website at www.gardengirltv.com This video is available through closed caption(cc) enjoy in any language. FULL TEXT Vertical Gardening Part 1 As urban gardeners, we have a limited amount of space to grow our vegetables and flowers. What I have done is I have employed verticle gardening. Right here as you can see, I have a variety of different cucumber plants. Now, a cucumber is vining crop, which means that with vertical support like this one, you can train it to grow up and the fruit, Take a look right here, can grow perfectly fine on the vine. Different types of crops that work well in a vertical garden are watermelon and pumpkin. Let us go take a look. Here, as you can see, my pumpkin plants are thriving. Pumpkin plants are also vining crops. Now, in the country, where you have a lot of space, you can just let this grow along the ground, but here in a city environment, we do not have all that space. So, what I have done here is, I put together a dog kennel. This is actually really nifty. It is exactly 4 x 4 so it fits perfectly in your raise beds. And, these vines just slough on themselves eventually. You do not have to continuously train them. Okay, so you can go vining crops on vertical supports, but there are other types of plants that also need support like my ...

Mel Bartholomew - Introducing Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening (SFG) is a great way to convert that boring suburbia grass lawn into a sustainable produce isle. Don't have a lawn? That's cool- SFG can be done practically anywhere. Mel was kind enough to send me this DVD which gives a quick intro into SFG. This method is great for the absolute beginner who might be a little overwhelmed by starting that first organic garden. Guerilla Gardening, Richard Reynolds

www.guerrillagardening.org Watch guerilla gardeners transform Elephant & Castle, London. When Richard Reynolds began planting flowers secretly at night outside his tower block in South London, he had no idea that he was part of a growing global movement committed to combating the forces of neglect, land shortage and apathy towards public spaces. But before long, his blog GuerrillaGardening.org had attracted other guerrillas from around the world to share their experiences of the horticultural frontline, and is now a focal point for guerrilla gardeners everywhere, with over 4000 people enlisted as recruits. On Guerrilla Gardening is Reynolds's lively, colourful treatise on why people illicitly cultivate land and how to do it yourself. From discreetly beautifying corners of Montreal to striving for green communal space in Berlin and sustainable food production in San Francisco, from Christmas trees on London roundabouts to the political agitations of landless workers in Brazil, Reynolds charts a battle that people worldwide are fighting on many different fronts. Along the way he unearths the movement's notable historic advances by seventeenth-century English radicals, a nineteenth-century American entrepreneur and public-spirited artists in 1970s New York. Reynolds has researched the subject with guerrilla gardeners from thirty different countries, and compiles their advice on what to grow where, how to cope with adverse environmental conditions, how to seed-bomb ...

Tips: Coffee Gardening

Video by Melissa McGinnis - twitter.com Blog by Joe Laur - twitter.com Boy, Melissa must drink enough coffee to keep a whole neighborhood of Starbucks gong. Or at least she finds enough uses for grounds that throwing them away should never be an option. Theres a lot of interesting things in this video post- from the ant protection that coffee grounds produce to the help for the bloomin flowers. According to Doug Greens Simple Gifts Farm, theres solid evidence that green gardeners should be reusing this waste to resource stream in the garden. The site states that research on slugs and caffeine shows that concentrations of caffeine as low as .01 % reduces feeding by slugs . But those concentrations dont kill. It takes 1-2% caffeine solutions to kill slugs as effectively as the chemicals normally used, but at that strength it can damage plant leaves. Coffee grounds contain about 05% caffeine. So coffee grounds will not kill slugs but can deter them from your plants. Nice. Chases them away without slug murder. How very vegan. And apparently coffee grounds make great mulch, particularly for plants that like acidic soils. The site states that they are acidic with a pH of between 3.0 and 5.0 making them superb for mulching rhododendrons, azalea and other acid loving plants. And you can scatter them thinly all over the rest of your garden as organic soil amendments. You need to add inches of the stuff to change the pH. As Melissa state, worms love coffee grounds and gardeners and ...

Building Raised Garden Beds for Organic Gardening with Vegetables, Flowers and Herbs

Hi I'm Doug Green from www.douggreensgarden.con and I want to show you how to build raised garden beds with a minimum of fuss and muss. Carpentry comes first - The first step after nailing together the boards (they're 2x8's - 8 feet long) and it took three of them to make this rectangle. They're common spruce and not pressure treated or cedar as i wanted to make some inexpensive beds - we tend to move things around at this stage of our garden building so if they rot out in a few years, I'll simply build good ones where I know I want them to stay. Second step dig out the weeds and grass in the bed and add a layer of compost - that's the black stuff on the ground. Third step i building raised garden beds approximately 4x8 feet in size - add a 3.8 cubic foot bale of peat moss to the bed and spread it out evenly. Fourth step is to add garden soil - add enough to top up the bed. Fourth step is to mix the underlying soil, the compost, the peat and the top soil into one big mixed up rich soil. Fifth step is to rake it all level. Note I'm not standing on the bed any more. The next person to walk on this bed gets yelled at big time. Once you make wonderfully aerated soil such as this, you do not walk on it. Celebrate! This bed will now grow anything and in our case with our shallow clay soils, this is almost a necessary garden building project to give us enough growing space in our landscaping for food production. Finished! The only two tools used (besides a saw and hammer) were ...

Container Gardening: Pruning

Container garden pruning at the seminar pages www.douggreensgarden.com by garden author Doug Green. In this gardening video, the emphasis is on how to prune plants in containers and hanging baskets. These instructions will show you how to maintain your hanging baskets in prime condition for the entire summer. It is not rocket science, these are gardening techniques that anybody can learn and succeed with. While the video is longer than normal, it demonstrates the pruning techniques that will both maintain and thicken the plants in your garden containers. It is an entire gardening course wrapped up in a short video. One of the things that beginner gardeners need to understand is that proper pruning techniques will reduce diseases and allow organic gardening techniques to work more effectively. So the bottom line is that container garden pruning is an important skill and if you are a do-it-yourselfer gardener, this is one skill you really need to master. Articles on pruning can be found www.douggreensgarden.com here and questions can be asked.

Oakland Food Connection: Educational Rooftop Gardening

Jason Harvey, director of The Oakland Food Connection, has an exciting vision for bringing real examples of practical gardening, food security and nutrition to urban schools. By partnering with the Bay Localize Rooftop Resources Project and community leaders like Lisa Blair, principal of EC Reems Academy, an elementary charter school in East Oakland, Jason has been able to create projects like this rooftop vegetable garden. Utilizing a valuable, unused space on the roof of EC Reems Academy, Jason's crew of local high school gardeners get down to business and build a half dozen garden boxes soon to be filled with plant and vegetable seeds. These vegetables will serve as more than just a healthy meal, they'll help educate kids and their parents about the possibilities that exist beyond processed, packaged foods and the often limited variety of produce sold in stores.

Biodynamic Gardening -- the tools and techniques to nurture your garden

When starting to garden in a biodynamic way it can be difficult working out what to do when. This DVD gives you the tools and shows you the techniques you need to know. Lynette West, of the Biodynamic Education Centre, shows biodynamic gardening methods to the gardeners at Garden Organic, Ryton. Learn with them the vortex to chaos stirring technique; how to make biodynamic compost and understand the biodynamic preparations; how to make and use manure concentrate, horn manure (BD500) and horn silica (BD501); how to work with the sowing and planting calendar and much, much more... The aim of biodynamic practice is to revitalise the soil and make it open and receptive to all the forces of the cosmos. In 1924, at the request of German farmers concerned about the decline in soil and animal fertility, Rudolf Steiner, an Austrian scientist, gave a series of lectures suggesting ways to work with the energies of the earth, moon, sun and planets as well as plants such as yarrow, chamomile, nettles, oak bark, valerian and dandelion to heal the earth, In biodynamics it is believed that there is nowhere quite like your garden. It has its own combination of soil, microorganisms and micro climate. Nobody else can produce fruit and vegetables quite like yours. What could be better than eating food grown in your own unique garden? 'Biodynamic Gardening -- the tools and techniques to nurture your garden' will help you have a bumper harvest!
