here! Focus: GLSEN

GLSEN is an organization committed to fostering respect and acceptance among students across the country. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network is the launching pad for Gay/Straight Alliances throughout the nation's high schools and colleges. Their mission is to ensure safety for all students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. GLSEN currently sponsors the National Day of Silence in which students take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and protest the discrimination and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies. By supporting students, GLSEN is able to work towards limiting the levels of discrimination and harassment that occur in our nation's school system. As well, GLSEN establishes safe spaces for students to unite to educate and enlighten their whole community.

GLSEN Behind the Scenes 2011

www.thinkb4youspeak.com Almost 90% of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students report being verbally harassed at school because of their sexual orientation. LGBT teens experience homophobic remarks and harassment throughout the school day, creating an atmosphere where they feel disrespected, unwanted and unsafe. Homophobic remarks such as "that's so gay" are the most commonly heard; these slurs are often unintentional and a common part of teens' vernacular. Most do not recognize the consequences, but the casual use of this language often carries over into more overt harassment. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the prevalence and consequences of anti-LGBT bias and behavior in America's schools. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce and prevent the use of homophobic language in an effort to create a more positive environment for LGBT teens. The campaign also aims to reach adults, including school personnel and parents; their support of this message is crucial to the success of efforts to change behavior.

Louder than Silence (GLSEN "Day of Silence")

WARNING: Not for young viewers. The Day of Silence Walkout Coalition is urging a one day absence from schools that participate in GLSEN's Day of Silence. Students should be free to support traditional marriage and relationships, without their peers seeing them as bigots. Teachers should focus on academic subjects, not on silent activism or changing students' minds about sexual issues. If schools permit the Day of Silence in class, students are best off somewhere else. Day of Silence is supposed to be a campaign against name-calling, bullying, and harassment. Capitol Resource Institute opposes the bullying of all students. Yet Day of Silence supporters called staff members at CRI and another coalition organization "disgusting" and "evil spawn," threatened that they could die soon, and much more. See for yourself what Day of Silence supporters are saying.

Does GLSEN Really Keep Kids 'Safe?'

The Problem with Same-Sex "Marriage" is a documentary that shows in heartbreaking detail what happens when marriage is redefined. We follow the stories of David and Tonia Parker and Robb and Robin Wirthlin as their religious liberties run headlong into political correctness and pro-homosexual instruction in their public schools. This documentary will open your eyes to the pattern of intolerance and intimidation toward those espousing marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This documentary will also equip you to know your rights, and to make a difference in you community. to learn more and order a full length copy go to www.frc.org

GLSEN'S BREAK THE SILENCE EVENT - PART 1 - APRIL 20, 2012 - CLEVELAND, OHIO

According to an Ohio research brief based on data from the GLSEN 2009 National School Climate Survey, 9 in 10 LGBT students in Ohio experienced verbal harassment because of their sexual orientation and 7 in 10 because of the way they expressed their gender. On April 20, 2012, people from the Cleveland lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and their allies came together to support the hundreds of thousands of students across the country who took a vow of silence to bring attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Sponsored by Plexus Chamber of Commerce, Linear Creative, the North Coast Mens Chorus and the Plexus Education Foundation, this quickly became one of the largest gatherings of community members in support of the GLSEN National Day of Silence throughout the country.
