Busby: Fukushima 'criminal event' calls for investigation

A newly released report on the Fukushima nuclear crisis says it was down to the plant's operators being ill-prepared and not responding properly to the earthquake and tsunami disaster. A major government inquiry said some engineers abandoned the plant as the trouble started and other staff delayed reporting significant radiation leaks. Professor Christopher Busby, scientific secretary to the European Committee on Radiation Risks, says health damage after contamination will be more serious than Japan announced. Fukushima - Total Cost

Arnie Gundersen of Fairwinds Associates (a leading nuclear expert) and Warren Pollock ( www.wepollock.com )redefine the Fukushima nuclear incidents (meltdowns and explosions) in terms of human and total cost. Its easy to look at the details of a highly complex speciality, but it has been hard to quantify the cost and risk of nuclear power up to now! We talk about the rate of failure of nuclear being so high that were that rate applied to aviation there would be no air travel. Nuclear is different in that you have no choice in trading risk for travel, or in this case risk for energy. During 9-11 human value in the western world was quantified in an actuarial model which put each person at a value of $1.8 million dollars. Gundersen explains that up to 1 Million people will be damaged by this incident which puts the total damage well into the trillions of dollars. The full cost of nuclear power has to consider human cost and costs of contamination to the environment. We clarify some important issues regarding radiation and particulate matter.

Japan's Fukushima 'worst in history'

At least one billion becquerels a day of radiation continue to leak from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant after the March earthquake and tsunami. Experts say that the total amount of radiation leaked will exceed amounts released from Chernobyl, making Fukushima the worst nuclear disaster in history. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from the Japanese capital of Tokyo.

Nuclear Graveyard: Fukushima lets journos in

Japan has opened the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to journalists for the first time since the disaster of last March. RT has obtained a video of the inside of the crippled complex. On Saturday, representatives of the Japanese and international media -- more than 30 reporters, photographers and cameramen -- were taken on a tour of the facility which was the site of the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years. Despite TEPCO's assurances that the radiation leaks pose much less danger now, the visitors had to wear a full set of protective gear during the tour. The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, some 225 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, was severely damaged by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami, and spewed large amounts of radioactive materials onto the surrounding countryside, much of which remains off-limits. Since then, the authorities have struggled to contain the crisis, with pledges being given in the summer that it would be resolved by the end of this year. However the Japanese government has admitted that it will take up to 30 years to completely neutralize the radiation released from the reactors. Media granted access to Fukushima

Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, crippled after an earthquake and tsunami in March, has been opened up to the media. The conditions were slowly improving to the point where a "cold shutdown" would be possible as planned, officials said on Saturday during a tour of the facility. About 30 mainly Japanese journalists were shepherded through the plant for the first time since the meltdown of the plant's reactors, the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl 25 years ago. Daily life in Fukushima: 'It was like visiting another universe'

Jan Beranek, who is with a team of Greenpeace activists investigating the fallout from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, says Japanese are encouraged to return to their normal lives unaware of the dangers they face in the contaminated area. "I personally find it very disturbing, because on the one hand you see the Japanese authorities forcing people and society to get back to normal... And yet at the same time there are still extremely high levels of radiation and the contamination of the soil, and also potentially in the food," the activist told RT. "This is just unbelievable because at those levels of exposure it certainly poses a risk to the lives and health of the people. If you draw a parallel to the Chernobyl disaster, then actually the Soviets decided to evacuate everyone living in the place, where radiation was three or four times lower than what we see in Fukushima City today," added Beranek, who personally visited the Chernobyl area after the 1986 disaster. Greenpeace is putting pressure on the Japanese government to gather and provide more information about the contamination in addition to doing its independent effort, Beranek said. "We've actually forced the government to, for example, extend the monitoring of the sea. And we also hear that the government is now revising at least some of the protective measures for children, which is definitely good to see. Yet the government is too slow and doing too little actually [compared to] what the situation would ...

Fukushima I Nuke Plant: Video of Inside the Reactor 1, 10/18/2011

Human workers (as opposed to robots) were sent to survey the upper floors of Reactor 1 at Fuku-I on October 18. The workers spent most of their time on the 4th floor, checking the integrity of the pipes for Isolation Condenser system. You do get to see the 3rd and 2nd floors toward the end of the video. Robot workers (like Quince and Pacbots) wouldn't be able to navigate through the debris on the 4th floor. The radiation level was high on all floors, as they were calling out the numbers at various locations. Warm, orange glow coming from outside through the collapsed ceiling. One worker said "The ceiling looks more collapsed than before." Warning: HydroVolcanic Explosion "INEVITABLE" at Fukushima update 11/20/11

Architect of Reactor 3 warns of massive hydrovolcanic explosion Posted by Mochizuki on November 19th, 2011 Architect of Fukushima Daiichi Reactor 3, Uehara Haruo, the former president of Saga University had an interview on 11/17/2011. fukushima-diary.com In this interview, he admitted Tepco's explanation does not make sense, and that the China syndrome is inevitable. He stated that considering 8 months have passed since 311 without any improvement, it is inevitable that melted fuel went out of the container vessel and sank underground, which is called China syndrome. He added, if fuel has reaches a underground water vein, it will cause contamination of underground water, soil contamination and sea contamination. Moreover, if the underground water vein keeps being heated for long time, a massive hydrovolcanic explosion will be caused. He also warned radioactive debris is spreading in Pacific Ocean. Tons of the debris has reached the Marshall Islands as of 11/15/2011.
