After receiving a completely unexpected amount of praise for his debut album, Shlomoshun Deluxe, and henceforth rocketing straight to the spotlight of the West Coast-centered beat scene, 20-year-old producer Henry Laufer has dropped his first official follow-up, the Camping EP. To back up a moment, I used the word "unexpected" because Laufer (who produces under the name Shlohmo) arrived seemingly out of nowhere with his debut. There was no buzz prior to the release, there were no remixes foretelling the artist's arrival, and his name wasn't even being tossed around by some of electronic music's more forward-thinking publications. That all changed once Shlohmo's debut hit. He's been featured on electronic and indie blogs alike, his name has been on the tongues of beat music tastemakers around the globe, and even SF Weekly named him one of the best new local producers of 2010. Needless to say, a lot was riding on Laufer being able to deliver another premium taste of his low-fidelity, bass-heavy beat tunes, and with the Camping EP, it's safe to say he did. A Wiltshire father could not bear the thought of his daughter Olivia taking her lessons elsewhere - and so made an offer on the private school with business partner Dave Stanley. Former Parachute Regiment Captain, Matt Hill was devastated when he heard his daughter's school would be forced to close at the end of this term. But while other parents scrambled around for places for their children elsewhere, the 38-year-old had a different idea as to how to secure his child's education. The history behind this album is somewhat fishy. It would seem that music business entrepreneur Monty Babson had decided to expand his interests beyond his existing Morgan Studios (sometime home to the Rolling Stones amongst lesser sixties stars) and its damp squib of a record label, and into the area of serious, "progressive" artists on a new outlet called "Morgan Blue Town". Sensing that the musical talent probably lay right under his nose with the numerous session boys who beavered away in the studio at all hours, he asked three of them, Wil Malone, Andy Johns (younger brother of Stones producer Glyn Johns, whose name was bizarrely changed to Jons for the sleeve credit) and engineer Mike Bobak to come up with something suitably forward-thinking for the album market.
