The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

A tribute to the 29 men who died November 10, 1975, aboard the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior. ---- Announcer (0:04): An air and sea search is continuing for possible survivors of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a 729 foot ore carrier, which apparently broke apart and sunk last night on Lake Superior. The ship and its 29-man crew vanished in a storm with 80 mile-an-hour winds and wave heights up to 25 feet. All that has been found is an oil slick and some debris. -- song begins at 0:17 -- Radio Transmission (3:11): "We last had contact with 'em, the mate had talked to him ... at about 10 minutes after 7, 19:10, and he said he was going along fine and no problem." -- Radio Transmission (3:21): "But it looks from the information that we have that it's, uh, fairly certain that the, uh, Fitzgerald went down." -- Radio Transmission (4:04): "Uh, no, I didn't have him, uh, visually, I had him on radar; he was, uh, exactly 10 miles ahead of us. I asked him how he was making out with his problems and he said he was holding his own, but I, uh, lost contact after that." ---- Lyrics: The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee" The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that big ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the Gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side coming back ...

Ella Fitzgerald - Misty

Ella Fitzgerald singing Misty in TV. Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree; And I feel like I'm clingin' to a cloud, I can' t understand I get misty, just holding your hand. Walk my way, And a thousand violins begin to play, Or it may be the sound of your hello, That music I hear, I get misty, whenever you're near. You can say that you're leading me on And it's just what I want you to do, Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost? That's why I'm following you. On my own, When I wander through this wonderland alone, Never knowing my right foot from my left My hat from my glove I'm too misty, and too much in love. Too misty, And too much... In love.....look at me....

Ella Fitzgerald - Round Midnight

Ella Fitzgerald sings "Round Midnight". Piano: Oscar Peterson Bass: Ray Brown Drums: Ed Thigpen Composer: Thelonious Monk (UK, 1961) It begins to tell, round midnight, midnight. I do pretty well till after sundown. Suppertime, I'm feeling sad; but it really gets bad, round midnight. Memories always start round midnight. Haven't got the heart to stand those memories, when my heart is still with you, and old midnight knows it, too. When a quarrel we had needs mending, does it mean that our love is ending? Darling, I need you, lately I find you're out of my heart, and I'm out of my mind. Let our hearts take wings round midnight, midnight. Let the angels sing, for your returning, till our love is safe and sound and old midnight comes around. Feeling sad, really gets bad round midnight... #

Ella Fitzgerald - All the Things You Are

Smooth Oscar Hammerstein & Jerome Kern number (in stereo). Arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle. Last year read the autobiography of New Zealand/Australian promoter Harry M. Miller. In 1964 he brought Ella and her band out for a tour of NZ and Australia. The following excerpt provides a small but unique insight into Ella: Another of the first big acts I toured to New Zealand through Joe Glaser was the wonderful wonderful Ella Fitzgerald - so talented and devoid of any diva-like behavior. If only some of her modern-day equivalents could take a leaf out of her book. Aside from her voice, which managed to override less than exemplary venue conditions in New Zealand, I remember Ellas great and warm sense of humour. The first time I met her was in Wellington-her plane was late and she had to perform that night. We were running out of time to get her onstage. As anyone could imagine and appreciate, this young promoter was beside himself, so much so I had all but destroyed a bunch of gladioli I planned to present to her on arrival. But, nervously, I nonetheless handed her the bunch of flowers when she touched down-what was left of them anyway. 'I think youre going to need some more flowers', she said, laughing. It put me instantly at ease-well almost. The funny thing about Ella and her band was that they would steal food from each others plates or from unsuspecting schmoes like me. If I was explaining something to Ella, outlining her schedule for the day, for example, she'd ...

Ella Fitzgerald - Night and Day (w/ lyrics)

Ella Fitzgerald - Night and Day Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom When the jungle shadows fall Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock As it stands against the wall Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops When the summer shower is through So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you Night and day, you are the one Only you beneath the moon and under the sun Whether near to me, or far It's no matter darling where you are I think of you Night and day, day and night, why is it so That this longing for you follows wherever I go In the roaring traffic's boom In the silence of my lonely room I think of you Night and day, Night and day Under the hide of me There's an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me And its torment won't be through 'Til you let me spend my life making love to you Day and night, night and day

Ella Fitzgerald - Manhattan

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers and Hart Songbook (1956) Summer journeys to Niag'ra and to other places aggra- vate all our cares. We'll save our fares! I've a cozy little flat in what is known as old Manhattan we'll settle down right here in town! We'll have Manhattan the Bronx and Staten Island too. It's lovely going through the zoo! It's very fancy on old Delancy street you know. The subway charms us so when balmy breezes blow to and fro. And tell me what street compares with Mott Street in July? Sweet pushcarts gently gli-ding by. The great big city's a wonderous toy just made for a girl and boy. We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy! We'll go to Yonkers Where true love conquers In the whiles And starve together dear, in Chiles We'll go to Coney And eat baloney on a roll In Central Park we'll stroll Where our first kiss we stole Soul to soul And "My Fair Lady" is a terrific show they say We both may see it close, some day The city's glamour can never spoil The dreams of a boy and goil We'll turn Manhattan into an isle of joy!

F. Scott Fitzgerald: The Great American Dreamer part 1

This documentary on the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald is informative and a valuable resource for an introduction to the author or his works. This biography not only gives insight into Fitzgerald's life, but also gives some background into what was the roaring 20s. The documentary delves into Fitzgerald's early years, as young Fitzgerald wanted to make something of himself after seeing his father struggle after losing his job. Francis was able to use his gifted ability as a writer to gain acceptance as an outsider in school, and then progress into his work as an author. He met up with his "golden girl", Zelda, and, after they married, their lives became the symbol of the time period. . Many of Fitzgerald's novels are chronicled, and it is interesting how many characters and events within these novels were based upon the author's life. It captures the many setbacks that Fitzgerald faced during the years with Zelda, who battled with schizophrenia a good deal of their marriage, and eventually how Zelda spent her remaining years in an asylum. This documentary evidences how both Fitzgerald and Zelda influenced the Jazz Era with their extravagant lifestyle and life of excess. It gives a brief account of the Lost Generation, and the friendship and rivalry Fitzgerald experienced with Hemingway. One unique element that Fitzgerald possessed was his perfectionist-like nature, as he spent painstaking amounts of time editing and revising draft after draft of his works. Although ...
