Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (1/2)

An excerpt from FW Murnau's 1926 masterpiece, Faust. This is from the first part of the film; Satan unleashes the plague upon the town where doctor Faust lives. With death all around, some people go into a wild and desperate revelry, others seek the word of the Lord with a sort of holy abandon. Faust learns that all his knowledge is to no avail. He burns his books, including the Bible, but then one very special and sinister tome captures his eye ... The music is from Gustav Holst's The Planets and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique; both film and music has been edited to fit each other. Please note that the sound has not been compressed before uploading, which means that quiet passages are very quiet, and loud ones are very loud. With youtube's 10 minute limit, I've had to divide the excerpt in two parts, so look out for Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (2/2)!

Faust - 1994 - Jan Svankmajer - [extracto]

Faust (1994) Directed by Jan Svankmajer Writing credits (in alphabetical order) Johann Wolfgang Goethe play Christian Dietrich Grabbe novel Christopher Marlowe play "The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus" Jan Svankmajer writer ---------------------------------- Plot: A very free adaptation of Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus', Goethe's 'Faust' and various other treatments of the old legend of the man who sold his soul to the devil. Svankmajer's Faust is a nondescript man who, after being lured by a strange map into a sinister puppet theatre, finds himself immersed in an indescribably weird version of the play, blending live actors, clay model animation and giant puppets. Gounod's FAUST - Ballets

ACT V ~ Ballets ~ Qu'as-tu donc? ... Ne la vois-tu pas? It is Walpurgis NIght and a diabolic ballet ensues. Faust is subjected to visions, the last of which is of Marguerite in prison for the murder of their child and awaiting execution. Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Part 1. It debuted at the Théâtre Lyrique (Théâtre-Historique, Opèra-National, Boulevard du Temple) in Paris on March 19, 1859. (en.wikipedia.org Gounod's Faust is the story of a scholar who sells his soul to the Devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and worldly indulgences. McVicar's innovative production sets this story around the time of the Franco-Prussian War (1870) in the gothic, seamy underbelly of Paris. He characterizes Faust, performed by Roberto Alagna, as a man both torn between the theater and religion, and grappling with his own sexuality. Gounod's FAUST - Seigneur, daignez permettre ("Church Scene")

ACT IV ~ Seigneur, daignez permettre ("Church Scene") Five months have passed, Marguerite has been deserted by Faust but is carrying his child. In church, her prayers are repeatedly interrupted by demons. She faints as Mephistopheles's final curse denies her the hope of salvation. Faust is a grand opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré from Carré's play Faust et Marguerite, in turn loosely based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust, Part 1. Cradle of Filth- Absinthe With Faust

***~~~###DISCLAIMER: NOT MINE###~~~*** Pour the emerald wine Into crystal glasses We will touch the divine Through kissed catharsis Let us pitch to the seven-year itch Of the ultra-decadent To a tainted world and the painted girls That our fantasies spent Tripping through boudoirs laced with opiate themes Sipping the bizarre, tasting copious dreams A toast to those most sacrilegious of days Where for every whim won One soon repays We touched the stars That now laugh from afar At we, the damned The damned The damned The damned We have spent our time Drenched in opulent splendour But when midnight chimes Will gilded souls surrender? Let us drink on the giddying brink Of pools of excrement All manner of shit for the glamour and glitz Mephistopheles lent I remember the night as if it were engraved A bright marble bridge stretched across dark waves To the shore from the moon and by Her grace Came that erudite stranger That fucker He was a predator, creditor cold Our blood was young on the yellowing scroll And all that glittered was not gold But we wanted everything And for it all lost our souls Come my friend, to fate let's raise Two finger shots at this our last soiree For tomorrow I fear Swoops all too deadly near This precipitous weir to Hell's high gate We touched the stars That now laugh from afar At we, the damned The damned The damned The damned He was a predator, creditor cold Our blood was young on the yellowing scroll And all that glittered was not gold But we wanted ...
