Amazing Abstract Expressionism

www.zhibit.org Even though the artist comes from Mediterranean, he turned completely different subject matter from veduts and sea landscapes to motifs of women and love-motifs which weighted down many artists trough centuries, but he presented them at new way. Although just indicate subject is clearly described and title of works alone bring to express main idea of the artist. Images alone is not essence, but way in which they express strong sub consciousness of the artist who spontaneous, even aggressive reduces details to come to main aim what is theme itself. That's why faces at pictures looks like to wear masks under which radiate feelings of love, sadness, pain, curiosity, as well as characteristic of chastity or hypocrisy. Although the basic elements of painting are annul-forms, perspective, color which is monochromes, we can catch sight of detailed work and studious access to paint. This painting carry into itself feature of Ensor or late Picasso although the artist himself is not conscious of that. He's jump over steps of experiments and discovering ourselves and bring his own art to top. We can typify this art like abstract expressionism which this artist gave one his own note and spirit, until today unseen." Brankica Ilijic

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: German Expressionist Silent Horror Film (1920 Movie)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchive.org The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (German: Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari) is a 1920 silent horror film directed by Robert Wiene from a screenplay by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. It is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the early times. This movie is cited as having introduced the twist ending in cinema. Jean-Marc Lofficier wrote Superman's Metropolis, a trilogy of graphic novels for DC Comics illustrated by Ted McKeever, the second of which was entitled Batman: Nosferatu, most of the plot derived from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Caligari himself appears as a member of Die Zwielichthelden (The Twilight Heroes), a German mercenary group in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill. Also, in The Sandman issue "Calliope" written by Neil Gaiman and pencilled by Kelley Jones, a character, Richard Madoc, writes a book "The Cabaret of Dr. Caligari", an obvious pseudonym. The name 'Caligari' has been used extensively in popular music. Pere Ubu has a song entitled "Caligari's Mirror". Goth rock group Bauhaus used a still of Cesare from the film on early t-shirts for their popular single "Bela Lugosi's Dead". The band Abney Park has a cut "The Secret Life of Dr. Calgari" on their album Lost Horizons (released 2008). The 1998 music video for Rob Zombie's single "Living Dead Girl" restaged several scenes from the film ...

Chaim Soutine - 20th Century Expressionist Artist

The man, born in 1893 in a shtetl in today's Belarus, is a mysterious, shadowy figure. For this film, filmmakers Valérie Firla and Murielle Levy seized the handful of clues they had - a few books, an old film, a tomb at Montparnasse cemetery - and conducted an investigation with brio. They retrace the destiny of this fascinating painter, who was so tormented he destroyed the canvases that bespoke his anguish. This documentary is more than a well-deserved tribute to a major painter from the school of Paris. The filmmakers' careful inquiry and evident fascination for the man offer us a subtle approach to the work, and an encounter with a complex person, often detestable and deeply engaging. Edward W. Gilmore; Abstract Expressionism Interview 1

Abstract Expressionist, Edward Gilmore discusses his inspiration and passion for Expressionist Art. Inspired by Jackson Pollock, Ed talks about his views on Modern Art and Abstract Expressionism. "Abstract expressionism was an American post--World War II art movement. It was the first specifically American movement to achieve worldwide influence and also the one that put New York City at the center of the art world, a role formerly filled by Paris. Although the term "abstract expressionism" was first applied to American art in 1946 by the art critic Robert Coates, it had been first used in Germany in 1919 in the magazine Der Sturm, regarding German Expressionism. In the USA, Alfred Barr was the first to use this term in 1929 in relation to works by Wassily Kandinsky." Quote from; Hess, Barbara; "Abstract Expressionism", 2005

TRUTH. German Expressionism / Art film.

Basically I drew inspiration for this film through a few different experiences, especially from the past year or so. I tried to capture what it felt like, but because of time limits I had to make do with the footage I had as oppose to being able to shoot all my other symbolic and stylistic ideas. Perhaps I will come back to this film again, some time in my future and try to make it as accurate as I can, but for now this will have to do. This is quite personal and it means a fair bit to me, so I do hope you enjoy it. Nikki.

Ed Gilmore; Abstract Expressionism Interview 2

Second interview with Edward W. Gilmore on Abstract Expressionism. "The movement's name is derived from the combination of the emotional intensity and self-denial of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European abstract schools such as Futurism, the Bauhaus and Synthetic Cubism. Additionally, it has an image of being rebellious, anarchic, highly idiosyncratic and, some feel, rather nihilistic.[2] In practice, the term is applied to any number of artists working (mostly) in New York who had quite different styles, and even applied to work which is not especially abstract nor expressionist. Pollock's energetic "action paintings", with their "busy" feel, are different both technically and aesthetically, to the violent and grotesque Women series of Willem de Kooning (which are figurative paintings) and to the rectangles of color in Mark Rothko's, Color Field paintings (which is not what would usually be called expressionist and which Rothko denied was abstract), yet all three are classified as abstract expressionists."
