Remembering Math Teacher Jaime Escalante

Jaime Alfonso Escalante was born in nineteen thirty in La Paz, Bolivia. Both his parents were teachers. He taught math and science in his home country for twelve years. In the nineteen sixties, Jaime Escalante and his wife Fabiola came to the United States. During the next several years, he learned to speak English and repeated his college education and teacher training. In nineteen seventy-four, Mr. Escalante was hired at Garfield High School to teach mathematics. The school was in a poor area of Los Angeles, California. Many of the students had serious problems with illegal drugs, gangs and violence. The school was in danger of losing its official approval to operate.Mr. Escalante's students were mostly Mexican-Americans from a Spanish-speaking area of the city. Many were the worst students at the school and thought to be "unteachable." But Mr. Escalante pushed the group to work hard. He told them basic math was too easy and that they had the ability to do harder work. He told his students that he believed in them, but they must have the desire to be successful.Jaime Escalante started an advanced math program with a small group of students. The math teacher at a tough East Los Angeles high school who inspired the movie "Stand and Deliver," has died. He was 79.A family friend says Jaime Escalante died Tuesday in Reno, Nev., where he was undergoing treatment for bladder cancer. An immigrant from Bolivia, he transformed Garfield High School by motivating struggling students to tackle and excel at advanced math and science. The school had more Advanced Placement calculus students than all but three other public high schools in the country. Edward James Olmos played Escalante in the film based on his story. Olmos says Escalante proved that inner city students can perform at the highest levels, and left an important legacy for American education. One of my all-time favorite places to be is on the Escalante arm of the lake. This song tries to portray the amazing combination of amazement and total peace that you get as you float through the towering red walls of this canyon. Friday, February 26: El Paso's Antonio Escalante defeated Mickey Roman of Juarez in an unanimous decision Friday night at the Haskins Center, televised on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights.
