Each wife's has her own house, land and animals spread over a large area, her husband spends his life walking from one wife's homes to another in order to produce as many children, especially as many girls as possible. For months are bride to be Nyankor's family has been traveling from one cattle camp to another to negotiate the largest number of cows possible. Cows are their valuate, and the more cows one has the higher position a Dinka has in society. Dinka's are known as being the tallest and most elegant people in the world. They have their own ideas about beauty. Dinka women remove 6 of their front teeth so they can spit as far as possible, and decorate their face and body with scars and the ash from burnt out cowpats. Komytea probably wouldn't have been the most obvious choice to give "The Sleeping Beauty" a bit of a re-tweak, but they have taken to the task with great gusto. The legendary Dinka of Southern Sudan are one of the most outstanding groups of pastoralists on the African continent. Covered with ash and up to seven foot six inches tall, the Dinka were referred to as gentle giants by the early explorers. Living in perfect harmony with their cattle, they believe their animals are their essential link to God. During the dry season they move their herds in search of pasture through the vast swamplands of the River Nile, crossing its many tributaries and surviving on the milk of their cattle. Numbering more than two million and one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa, the Dinka are also among the least touched by western ways. Angela Fisher and Carol Beckwith have spent a lifetime studying the peoples of the Horn of Africa, and have published their photography in a series of acclaimed books as well as major magazine features. This short video film was made by Oscar Mann, a film maker based in Kenya, who accompanied the two photographers during their 2006 fieldtrip to Southern Sudan. The Dinka is an ethnic group in South Sudan, inhabiting the Bahr el Ghazal region of the Nile basin, Jonglei and parts of southern Kordufan and Upper Nile regions. They are mainly agro-pastoral people, relying on cattle herding at riverside camps in the dry season and growing millet (Awuou) and other varieties of grains (rap) in fixed settlements during the rainy season. They number around 1.5 million people, constituting about 10% of the population [Ancient Historical Society Virtual Museum, 2010] of the entire country, and constitute the largest ethnic tribe in South Sudan. Dinka, or as they refer to themselves, Muonyjang (singular) and jieng (plural), are one of the branches of the River Lake Nilotes (mainly sedentary agri-pastoral peoples of East Africa who speak Nilotic languages, including the Nuer and Luo) (Seligman 1965). Dinka are sometimes noted for their height. With the Tutsi of Rwanda, they are believed to be the tallest people in Africa.However, the popular belief that Dinka "often" reach more than seven feet finds no support in scientific literature. An anthropometric survey of Dinka men published in 1995 found a mean height of 176.4cm, or roughly 5 ft 9.45 in the Ethiopian Medical Journal.
