Diahann Carroll Tribute

Here is a classic song performed by the sublime Diahann Carroll. Diahann Carroll (born Carol Diahann Johnson in 1935 in The Bronx, New York) is an Academy Award-nominated and Tony Award winning American actress and singer. She attended Manhattan's School of Performing Arts, along with schoolmate Billy Dee Williams. Her first film assignment was a supporting role in "Carmen Jones" in 1954, playing a friend of the sultry Carmen played by Dorothy Dandridge. She then starred in the Broadway musical "House of Flowers". In 1959, she played Clara in the film version of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" along with such distinguished actors as Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Sammy Davis Jr. and Pearl Bailey. In 1974 she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for "Claudine". Carroll is probably best known for her title role in "Julia" in 1968. This landmark accomplishment established Carroll as the first African-American actress to star in her own television series. She was nominated for an Emmy Award for the role in 1969, and won the Golden Globe Award for "Best Actress In A Television Series" in 1968. Her first Emmy nomination came in 1963 for her work in "Naked City". Some of Carroll's other earlier television work includes appearances on shows hosted by Jack Paar, Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson and Ed Sullivan, and The Hollywood Palace variety show. In the 1980's, she starred in the series "Dynasty" and "The Colbys". It was for her recurring role as Marion Gilbert in "A ...

DYNASTY: Enter Dominique Deveraux

Alexis (Joan Collins) meets her new nemesis Dominique Deveraux (Diahann Carroll). Carrol said in a 2001 "Dynasty" documentary she suggested herself for the role of Dominique Deveraux, by telling producer Aaron Spelling he needed a "black bitch" on 'Dynasty.' Sadly her character never really lived up to her immense potential. Taken from the "New Lady in Town" episode of "Dynasty" (#4.26), aired May 2, 1984.

A Different World: For Whom the Jingle Bell Tolls 1/2

Episode #54, Season 3 Whitley is in a foul mood during the holiday season, especially when her mother insists that they fly to the south of France instead of spending a quiet Christmas at home. She coldly rejects Freddie's offer to spend Christmas with her, and refuses to attend the gang's tree-trimming party. Whitley's mother appears to her in a dream and warns that she is headed for the same lonely, isolated existence as Marion. Whitley is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future (who bear an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Gaines, Walter and Jaleesa). She learns that Freddie will end up staying with Dwayne for the holidays, leading to a romance between the two. Whitley discovers that Dwayne and Freddie will marry, while she will spend her entire life alone. Whitley suddenly gets into the holiday spirit, decorates everything in sight, and asks Freddie to come along to France. However, Marion shows up at the dorm and tells her daughter that she wants to spend Christmas in Richmond. She settles on a compromise and takes the girls to a cabin in Maine.

Sammy Davis Jr. is one of the greatest entertainers in the history of show business, being able to sing, dance, act, play instruments and be funny as well. In Arthur Silber's book, Sammy Davis, Jr. Me and My Shadow, he explores the amazing career and inside feelings of a many who only wanted the freedom to pursue his art form. Diahann Carroll sings "Sleeping Bee" Harold Arlen

House of Flowers is a musical by Harold Arlen (music and lyrics) and Truman Capote (lyrics and book), based on his own novella. This was Capote's only musical. After a Philadelphia tryout, the show opened on Broadway on December 30, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 165 performances. The director was Peter Brook. The cast included Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, Juanita Hall, Ray Walston, and Geoffrey Holder. Although the show received generally poor reviews, the dance-rhythm infused score has been praised for its mix of blues and calypso. Most of the original orchestral score for Flowers has been lost, but the piano score survives.[1] Oliver Messel won the Tony Award for Best Scenic Design, the show's only nomination. The story concerns two neighboring bordellos that battle for business in an idealized West Indies setting. One of the prostitutes, Ottilie, turns down a rich lord to marry a poor mountain boy named Royal. Her madam plots to keep her by having Royal sealed in a barrel and tossed into the ocean. Royal escapes the watery death by taking refuge on the back of a turtle. The lovers are eventually married and live happily ever after. There was an unsuccessful Off-Broadway revival in 1968 at Theater de Lys. In 2003, there was an Encores! production, starring Tonya Pinkins and Armelia McQueen as the battling bordello madams and Maurice Hines as Captain Jonas, the smuggler. The virginal Ottilie was played by Nikki M. James, and the mountain boy, Royal, was ...

Diahann Carroll Joins "DYNASTY" (1984)

ABC touted the arrival of Diahann Carroll who joined "DYNASTY" - America's #1 TV series in the 1984/85 season - as series regular Dominique Deveraux in their "Love Boat Fall Preview Party" (aired in September 1984). The Aaron Spelling soap began its 5th season on the network several days later. Carroll of course appeared in the final 2 episodes of season 4 earlier that year as part of the May cliffhanger, but the writers had kept her connection to the Carrington family a secret. According to early rumors (from April 1984) four different versions of the revelation who she was were shot, but in the end fans learned they had to wait till fall to find out. One of the rumors was that she would be the long-lost mother of the deceased major domo Joseph's daughter Kirby (Kathleen Beller). The press reported at the time she would be "the first major black performer on a network prime time soap opera." news.google.com

Diahann Carroll - Love Is Just a Word

This song originally appeared on the soundtrack of the 1961 movie, Goodbye Again, and inspired Johannes Mario Simmel's book of the same name. In the book, Love Is Just a Word is a favourite song of one of the main charcters, Verena Lord. --------- Love is just a word. It does not mean a thing. It´sa fancy way of saying: two people want to swing. Love is just a word, and when the fun begins, A word we use to cover mountain-high with sins. Love is just a word, that´s dropped all over town, An active little word - and most improper now. Love is just a word, but let me make it clear... Though I know, we know, it´s really insincere., Love is just a word - a word we love to hear...
