Peter Roper-Curzon plays Liszt - Mephisto Waltz No.1
Recorded during a live performance in 2004 at St. John's Church in Notting Hill, London. Peter Roper-Curzon was born in 1977 and comes from a musical family of ten children. He first studied piano under Joan Bourlet at the age of four and gave his first public recital in Malmesbury House in Salisbury when he was ten. In 1986 he became a chorister in Salisbury Cathedral then head chorister (Bishop's Chorister) in 1990. He studied the organ under David Halls and the under Robin Wells when he was awarded the top Music Scholarship to Charterhouse. There he studied the piano, organ, 'cello, harpsichord and fortepiano. He received tuition for the organ under many eminent names such as Gillian Wier, Peter Hurford, Anne Marsden-Thomas and, for the piano; under Roslyn Tureck and his longstanding tutor, Yonty Solomon. In his years at Charterhouse, Peter gave many organ and piano recitals around the UK and appeared as soloist with the Guilford Symphony Orchestra in Beethoven's third Piano Concerto. He played solo recitals and concert in venues such as St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Windsor Castle, Steinway Hall, Beaulieu Abbey and the Purcell Room, the latter at the invitation of the BBC. In 1996 he was a National Keyboard Finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the year Competition appearing in the televised finals. Allegro Part IV : www.youtube.com ~~~ Sir Clifford Curzon (1907 - 1982) Clifford Michael Siegenberg, English pianist. His family name was changed to Curzon soon after his birth. Curzon's mother was an amateur singer and his father a dealer in antiques. His uncle was the composer Albert Ketelbey, who had a huge success around the time of World War I. Curzon was not a child prodigy his brother and sister received higher marks in piano examinations yet Clifford was a sensitive child who realised that he felt and reacted differently from his family to the things around him. Curzon entered London's Royal Academy of Music in 1919 where he studied with Charles Reddie who had been a pupil of Bernard Stavenhagen. He won many prizes, including the MacFarren Gold Medal, and then continued his studies with Katherine Goodson, a Leschetizky pupil. At the Royal Academy Curzon was encouraged by Sir Henry Wood who conducted his first appearance at Queens Hall; at the age of sixteen he took part in a performance of Bach's Concerto for Three Keyboards. Peter Roper-Curzon plays the Rachmaninov prelude in C-Sharp minor from Op.3 No.2, during a live performance in 2004 at St. John's Church in Notting Hill, London. I'd like to make a note on this particular recording. It is undeniably true that there are many wrong notes, and some things are different. But the level of artistry and musicianship that Mr. Roper-Curzon displays is superb. I fully welcome discerning opinions, but what we have here is a performance that is alive and real. I am not in anyway insinuating that this is the best, because in any form of art that is a foolish pretense. It is simply highly artistic. Humanly so.
