Chickamauga (1962)

This is the first part of Robert Enrico's trilogy of short films, based on the Civil War stories of Ambrose Bierce. While the second installment, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, is easily the most famous, all three films are stunning, filled with unforgettable images, and great use of sound. To my knowledge, the trilogy isn't available commercially. I've had a VHS copy that I recorded off the 16mm prints at my college over a decade ago, and when I couldn't find it anywhere else I figured I'd throw it up on YouTube so other people could enjoy it. For more information on the trilogy: houseofmirthandmovies.wordpress.com "Though the most famous, La rivière du hibou, is actually the middle story in the trilogy. The first is Chickamauga, named after a battle from the American civil war which marked a very significant Union defeat. It is also remarkable for the imagery it inspired, notably in inspiring the unofficial naming of the Chickmauga river, as "the bloody pond" due to the fact it apparently ran with the blood of the over 35000 soldiers who died during the two day battle. This particular film is told from the perspective of a deaf and mute child, who wanders off the day of the battle. When he eventually stumbles upon the aftermath of the fight, it is presented as a surreal dream. The boy's disability hinders his ability to truly understand death, which is why he can wander through it so freely. He never hears the sounds of battle, or the cries of the dying, and ...

Ghost Hunters investigate Chickamauga Battlefield with local writer Mary Catherine Duhon

The lead investigator for a ghost hunting team said it may take two weeks for results from its recent investigation of Chickamauga Battlefield. We have over 20 hours of video and 30 hours of audio to go through with a fine-tooth comb, said Rick Howard, president of Ghosts and History of Southeastern Tennessee Inc. (GHOST). The team spent about five hours Saturday night and early Sunday morning looking for ghosts at the historic battlefield, where one of the Civil Wars bloodiest battles was fought. About 4000 soldiers died. We concentrated on the Snodgrass Hill area, the (Snodgrass) cabin, the field next to the cabin and Old Vittetoe Road, where there has been reported sightings of Green Eyes, Howard said. Green Eyes is reportedly a ghost that roams the battlefield. The legend has many variations, including the tale of a soldier whose head was shot off by a cannon. The GHOST team also studied Wilder Tower, including the so-called White Lady that some claim to have spotted in that area. The group was equipped with eight to 10 high-powered infrared video cameras and about a dozen audio recorders, as well as several other high-tech devices. Howard said the investigation started about 9 pm Saturday and ended shortly after 2 am Sunday. Local writer Mary Catherine Duhon accompanied the GHOST team. When I was asked to come along with GHOST to investigate the Chickamauga Battlefield I was very excited to be included as an observer since I have been in love with the battlefield ...

Chickamauga Battlefield

The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19--20, 1863, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the Civil War and involved the second highest number of casualties in the war following the Battle of Gettysburg. The battle was fought between the Union Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for West Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles northeast of downtown Chattanooga).
