Cabling a SoftLayer Data Center Server Rack

www.softlayer.com ≡ http A few weeks ago, Sam Fleitman SoftLayer's CTO posted "Before They Were SoftLayer Data Centers," (sftlyr.com a virtual scrapbook from the San Jose data center construction process, and based on the surge of traffic we saw to the post, our customers loved it. It's incredible to see an open warehouse-looking space transformed into an enterprise data center environment, and there's more amazingness where that came from. In addition to the pre-"Truck Day" pictures we posted on the blog and in the San Jose DC Construction album on Flickr, we trained a video camera on a row in the data center to capture the cabling process. What's so interesting about plugging in cables? Consider the fact that each of the network switches we use in a rack has at least 48 ports. Now consider that each rack has two public network switches, two private network switches and one out-of-band management network switch that need to be connected to every SoftLayer server in the rack. That's 240 pre-measured network cables that need to be labeled and routed to specific heights in each rack ... without getting tangled and knotted up (see: behind your TV or under your computer desk). Get ready to be amazed here's the SJ data center team in action. The video is playing at 20x normal speed, and given the amount of time it takes to complete the cabling process for each rack, we enlisted the help of SpongeBob SquarePants in our use of the "Two Hours Later" cut. www.softlayer.com ≡ http

Faster Fiber Optic Installation with Preterminated Optical Cabling

Corning Cable Systems demonstrates a very ingenious way to solve a common data center problem - acheiving fiber connection density without making effective cabling impossible. Corning designed a 4U chasis for patching dozens of fiber connections, while still making it easy to swap out the connections, reverse their polarity as necessary, and generally change connections as needed. Here Martyn Easton shows LockerGnome's Brandon Wirtz how the Corning LANscape Pretium EDGE Solutions make it possible to speed up fiber optic installations, acheive 100% more density than other alternatives, and make moving connections a simpler process. On the surface, this elegant cabling solution may look deceptively simple, but if you've ever had to fight with a mess of fiber, you know exactly how much better this looks to be.

Pro/CABLING in Pro/ENGINEER

This is the first in our series of 6 tutorials on Pro/CABLING. This powerful module will allow you to rapidly create and route wires and harnesses through Pro/ENGINEER assemblies. This tutorial is designed with the beginner in mind. By completion of the Cabling subject, you will be confident with just about any type of Cabling project. There is typically a fairly high learning curve with Pro/CABLING. Luckily, this subject guides you through all the initial setup that typically stumps the new user. We introduce terms such as Harnesses, Spools, Sheath Spools, Connectors, Designation, and Entry Ports. The tutorial begins by creating a Harness and a Spool. From there, individual wires can be created and routed through the assembly. Pretty simple and straightforward, but a great way to begin learning this valuable application...

Speed Cabling (Boing Boing tv)

Xeni visits the first-ever "Cable Untangling Championships" at Machine Project in Los Angeles, where knottiness abounds and speedy-fingered sysadmins pwn the world. "Cabling" is a new sport founded by Steven Schkolne in which competitors must race to detangle bundles of CAT-5 ethernet cables. The person who unravels their wire bundle the fastest at this particular meet wins a spaghetti dinner (hm, perhaps it's all a front for Pastafarianism). DJ Cabling...and how to connect...

This video is something that I've been meaning to do for a while now, but never got round to. It is not very exciting I'm afraid, but cabling and how to connect to various systems is something that we all encounter when playing at various venues with differing connection availability. I would always suggest that you visit a venue prior to playing their, just so that you can familiarise yourself with how your going to connect to their system. Things used in this video are: Laptop 3.5mm to RCA cable Numark PHX USB headphones Behringer Ultra DI20 Numark 4DMC controller Hercules DJ Steel Pioneer HDJ-1000 headphones Native Instruments Kontrol S4 Gemini FX7000 Mixer Prosound 1000 amp RCA cables XLR cables 1/4" TRS to XLR cables RCA to 1/4" mono cable Korg NanoPad USB cables.
