Beograd - Belgrade - Belgrad - Belgrado

Belgrade (Beograd) is the capital of Serbia, and has a population of around 2 million. It is situated in South-Eastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient times been an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roads of Eastern and Western Europe. Belgrade is the capital of Serbian culture, education, science and economy. As a result of its tumultuous history, Belgrade has for centuries been home to many nationalities, with Serbs of the Orthodox Christian religion making up the majority of the population (90%). The official language is Serbian, while visitors from abroad can use English to communicate. The climate in Belgrade is a moderate continental one, with an average daytime temperature of 11.7oC. Belgrade is in the Central European Time (CET) zone (GMT+1 hour). Summer time (GMT+2 hours) lasts from the end of March until the end of October. The official currency is the dinar (RSD), but Euros can be exchanged freely. The Belgrade area code for domestic calls is 011 and for international calls ++381-11.

The Beograd - Bar Line

A trip along one of the most fascinating railroad lines in Europe. Built only in the 1970s it connects Belgrade in Serbia with the Montenegrinian cities of Podgorica and Bar at the Adriatic coast. It already is very scenic at the Bosnian border with numerous tunnels and tall bridges, but as the border to Montenegro is crossed it gets downright spectacular. Sometimes you are that far above the valley ground, some people say you think you are flying. The whole trip culminates in the crossing of the tallest railroad bridge in the world (?), Mala Rijeka Bridge before the line descend towards the plains of Podgorica and Lake Shkoder. The last part of the video shows a visit to Mala Rijeka bridge on the next day.

BELGRADE BEOGRAD SERBIA 1973 TRIP

Belgrade (Serbian: Beograd, Београд listen (help·info)) is the capital of Serbia and Montenegro. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe, first settled in the 3rd century BC by the Celts before becoming the Roman settlement of Singidunum. The name Beograd (Belgrade) was first mentioned in 878 AD. It has been the capital of Serbia since 1404, and was the capital of Yugoslavia from 1918 until 2003. The city lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube in north central Serbia, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. The official population of the Belgrade region is 1576124. Unofficially (taking into account the large number of Serbian refugees and displaced persons from Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the province of Kosovo-Metohia), the population probably surpasses 2 million. It is the largest city on the territory of the former Yugoslavia, and by population ranks fourth in the Balkans behind Istanbul, Athens and Bucharest. WIKIPEDIA DON PUGH

(EN ) Belgrade (Serbian: Београд, Beograd ) is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city lies on two international waterways, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkan Peninsula. Likewise, the city is placed along the pan-European corridors X and VII. With a population of 1630000 (official estimate 2007), Belgrade is the largest city in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and the third largest in Southeastern Europe, after Istanbul and Athens. One of the oldest cities in Europe, with archeological finds tracing settlements as early as the 6th millennium BC, Belgrade's wider city area was the birthplace of the largest prehistoric culture of Europe, the Vinča culture. First mentioned by the Greek sources, a settlement on today's location was founded in 3rd century BC by the Celts who named it the White City, which it still bears. It was awarded city rights by the Roman before it was permanently settled by White Serbs from the 600s onwards. As a strategic location, the city was battled over in 115 wars and razed to the ground 44 times since the ancient period by countless armies of the East and West. In medieval times, it was in the possession of Byzantine, Frankish, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Serbian rulers. In 1521 Belgrade was conquered by the Ottomans and became the seat of the Pashaluk of Belgrade, as the principal city of Ottoman Europe and among the largest European cities. Kalemegdan & Beogradska Tvrđava (Belgrade/Beograd)

(EN) Kalemegdan is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade and for centuries the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, thus the history of the fortress, until most recent history, equals the retard the Celtic tribe of Scordisci. The city-fortress was later conquered by the Romans, became known as Singidunum and became a part of "the military frontier", where the Roman Empire bordered "barbaric Central Europe". Singidunum was defended by the Roman legion IV Flaviae which built a fortified camp on a hill at the confluence of the rivers the Danube and the Sava. In the period between AD 378 and 441 the Roman camp was being repeatedly destroyed in the invasions by the Goths and the Huns. The legend says that Attila's grave lies on the confluence of the Sava and the Danube (under the Fortress). In 476 Belgrade again became the borderline between the empires: Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), and the Slav- Avar State in the North. The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I rebuilt the Fortress around 535. In the following centuries a fortress suffered continuous destruction under the Avar sieges. The Slavs (Serbs) and Avars had their "state union" north of Belgrade with the Serbs and other Slavic tribes finally settling in the region of Belgrade as well as the regions west and south of Belgrade in the beginning of the 7th century. The name Belgrade (or Beograd, in Serbian), which, not just in Serbian ...
