Proudly I present this video of my friend and former student Martin van den Berg. Listen to Martin's super sound on his "Kühnl & Hoyer" bass-trombone in "Saturday Night Is the Loneliest Night of the Week" arranged and conducted by Patrick Williams. Martin plays here with his own orchestra, the "Metropole Orchestra Big Band" from the Netherlands. Beside Martin the other trombone section members are Bart van Lier, Jan Bastiani and Jan Oosting. Little detail is that both Jan Bastiani and Jan Oosting also studied with me. Martin is professor at both the Amsterdam- and Rotterdam "Codarts" Conservatories. Sorry for the little synchronisation problem between sound and video!

This is the first short bass trombone excerpt of a series I have in mind to make available for YouTube. I hope you will enjoy! Several years ago, we ( the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev) played Mahler 7. I found an old video tape and made it into a digital version. The sound is not perfect because it was recorded from a television program and has some level adjustments but it gives you an idea of this famous excerpt.

During the Slide Factory 2007 trombone festival in Rotterdam I had the honor to play Johan de Meij's composition for bass trombone and Wind Band, "Canticles". Johan wrote the piece in memory of my father and for me. This was the premiere of the piece and for me it was a very emotional experrience. I played it with the Royal Marine Band of the Netherlands, the orchestra my father played in at the beginning of his career. I hope you will enjoy these three short parts of the composition.

Some years ago I played a concert on Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. It was an all Johan de Meij music concert with the Banda Municipal de Tenerife. I played then Johan's Canticles for bass trombone and wind-band, he wrote for me. The encore of the concert was this beautiful aria"Ch'ella mi Creda" taken from Puccini's la Fanciulla del West in a Johan de Meij arrangement. A bit too high for bass trombone but fun to play!. Sorry for the sound quality!
