Gene Autry (5 Star) - Back In The Saddle Again

This great song was written by Gene as well as many, many others. Folks don't remember or realize that this man is the only entertainer with 5 stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. (Some have said it was because he owned the sidewalk, but in truth it was talent, talent, talent.)
"The Last Round-Up" (Gene Autry, 1933)

One of Gene's finest early recordings, of Billy Hill's classic: THE LAST ROUND-UP I'm headin' for the last round-up gonna saddle old Paint for the last time and ride So long old pal it's time your tears were dried I'm headin' for the last round-up... Git along little dogies git a long git along git along little dogies git along. Git along little dogies git along git along git along little dogies git along! I'm headin' for the last round-up To the far away ranch of the Boss in the sky. Where the strays are counted and branded there goes I I'm headin' for the last round-up. I'm headin' for the last rouup gonna saddle old Paint for the last time and ride So long old pal it's time your tears were dried I'm headin' for the last round-up Git along little dogies git a long git along git along little dogies git along. Git along little dogies git along git along git along little dogies git along! I'm headin' for the last round-up To the far away ranch of the Boss in the sky. Where the strays are counted and branded there goes I I'm headin' for the last round-up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ...Billy Hill was so desperate for money, he almost sold his best known song, The Last Round-Up, for just $25. Fortunately ASCAP President Gene Buck thought the song was so good, he loaned him $200 to hold him over until he could find a major publisher and get his song recorded. Hill immediately joined ASCAP. A few years later he testified before a Congressional Hearing Committee in Washington in ...

His Talent with the guitar and his voice led to performing at local dances. While working as a telegrapher, Autry would sing and accompany himself on the guitar to pass the lonely hours, especially when he had the midnight shift. One night he got encouragement to sing professionally from a customer, the famous humorist and wit, Will Rogers, who had heard Autry singing. As soon as he could collect money to travel, he went to New York. He auditioned for Victor Talking Machine, at just about the time (end of 1928) it became RCA Victor. "South of the Border" (Gene Autry, 1939)

One of "The Singing Cowboy"'s finest numbers, from the Republic picture "Down Mexico Way". Written by Jimmy Kennedy and Michael Carr. SOUTH OF THE BORDER South of the border, down Mexico way, That's where I fell in love When the stars above came out to play. And now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray South of the border, down Mexico way. She was a picture in old Spanish lace. And for a tender while I kissed the smile upon her face. For it was fiesta, and we were so gay South of the border, Mexico way. Then she sighed as she whispered 'manana' Never dreaming that we were parting. And I lied as I whispered 'manana' For our tomorrow never came. South of the border, I rode back one day There in a veil of white by candlelight She knelt to pray. The mission bells told me that I mustn't stay South of the border, down Mexico way. Ai-ai-ai-ai (ai-ai-ai-ai) Ai-ai-ai-ai (ai-ai-ai-ai) Ai-ai-ai-ai ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From Wiki: "South of the Border" is a popular song describing a trip to Mexico, written by Jimmy Kennedy and Michael Carr and published in 1939 for the film of the same name starring country star Gene Autry.[1] In the lyrics, a man looks back with regret and pain for having lied to the woman he can't forget ("...and now as I wander, my thoughts ever stray...") and returned for too late, just as she was preparing for marriage. The lyric is in juxtaposition with the music, which swings with syncopated joy. The song was a hit in 1939 for Shep Fields, vocal by Hal ...

"Vaya Con Dios" (Gene Autry, 1953)

This popular prayer soared to #1 in 1953 in the Les Paul/Mary Ford version (Mary got her broadcast break on Gene Autry's "Melody Ranch")--Autry was among several singers to also record the song that year. The writing team included Larry Russell, Inez James & Buddy Pepper. VAYA CON DIOS (GO WITH GOD) Now the hacienda's dark, the town is sleeping, Now the time has come to part, the time for weeping, Vaya Con Dios, my darling, Vaya Con Dios, my love. Now the village mission bells are softly ringing, If you listen with your heart, you'll hear them singing. Now the time has come to part, the time for weeping, Vaya Con Dios, my darling, Vaya Con Dios, my love. Wherever you may be, I'll be beside you, Although you're many million dreams away. Each night I 'll say a pray'r, a pray'r to guide you, To hasten every lonely hour of ev'ry lonely day. Now the dawn is breaking through a gray tomorrow, But the memories we shared are there to borrow. Vaya Con Dios, my darling, Vaya Con Dios, my love!

Gene Autry - Ghost Riders In The Sky

Classic. Written by Stan Jones (who later wrote the title song for the Western Series Cheyenne) who sold it to Gene Autry. This picture was to be named "Beyond The Purple Hills" before Gene bought the song. They then changed the name of the 1949 movie to "Riders In The Sky." Stan appears in the movie twice with Gene. Vaughn Monroe had a number 1 hit for 22 weeks with it. Later it seems everyone recorded it.
