AGIT/Turbo Zicatela Pro, presented by Found Boards, ID Boards, and Colorada Surf Event 4 of 8, Mens Grand Slam Series Puerto Escondido, Mexico 4-13 Aug 2011 ibaworldtour.com PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Oaxaca / Mexico (Saturday, Aug 13, 2011) - Jeff Hubbard (HAW) has won his second IBA Grand Slam event of the year, in massive 10-12 foot surf at Puerto Escondido, Mexico. Hubbard, took out Ryan Hardy (Margaret River/AUS) in the Final, to win the 2011 AGIT/Turbo Zicatela Pro, presented by Found Boards, ID Boards and Colorada Surf. Jeff Hubbard managed to defeat his brother Dave Hubbard (HAW) in the Quarter-finals, setting him up against an in-form Pierre-Louis Costes (Capbreton/FRA). Costes, picked off some incredible tube rides, but was unable to exit a particular one, that may have seen him through to the Final. Costes commented: "10-12 foot Puerto for a contest, it does not get any better! To have a competition in this, gets me so amped. I'm so proud to be a bodyboarder these days." With Hardy disposing of Guilherme Tamega (Copacabana/BRA) in the Quarter-final and Mitch Rawlins (AUS) in the Semi-final, it was inevitable that the 2011 AGIT/Turbo Zicatela Pro Final was going to be a showdown of epic proportions. Both Hardy and Hubbard are equally capable in big surf and have each won an event on the 2011 Grand Slam Series. With only one last chance to improve their rankings, some riders find themselves in a challenging position, requiring a win in Round 3 to progress, where as others can afford to relax as their position in the top half of the draw is secure. Each rider receives 6 points for a win, 4points for 2nd place, 3 for a 3rd and only 1 point for 4th. This presents a task to accumulate enough points throughout Round 1, 2 and 3 to make it into the top 16, which advance out of the Leaderboard stage and into the final phase of the Grand Slam event. Having won their Round 1 and 2 heats, 2 x World Champion, Jeff Hubbard, brother Dave Hubbard (HAW) and Brazilian powerhouse, Magno Oliviera are in a commanding lead with 12 points a piece. In the past two events, any rider with 10 or more points out of a possible 18 has made it into the top 16 and safely into Round 4. Pierre Louis Costes (Capbreton/FRA) managed to accumulate a total heat score of 15.50 out of 20, scoring an impressive 8.75 for a single backflip. The young frenchman defeated Dave Winchester (Mullumbimby/AUS) in 2nd, Igor Sanchez (CNY) 3rd and local rider, Ulises Rodriguez (MEX) 4th by earning the highest single wave score and total heat score of the event. Round 4 will feature the top 16 seeds battle each other, in a series of 8 man on man heats. Magno Oliviera (Guarapari/BRA) and Dave Hubbard (HAW), seeds No. 1 and 2 respectively, were the only competitors to win all of their Leaderboard phase heats. Dave Winchester (Mullumbimby/AUS) managed to win his Round 3 heat today and secure himself the 3rd seed slot into Round 4. Standouts included Ryan Hardy (Margaret River/AUS), Ben Player (Avalon/AUS) and 2010 Rookie of the Year, Jared Houston (Cape Town/ZAF). Hardy managed to find his momentum in Round 3, walking away with a win, to securing the final slot into Round 4.
