The Battle for Bomb Alley - Afghanistan - Part 1/2 - HD

www.bbc.co.uk For four years, thousands of British servicemen fought with the Taliban for the district of Sangin - the most violent part of Afghanistan. The fighting cost 106 British lives, including Staff-Sergeant Olaf Schmidt, who won the George Cross there. Last year, the British withdrew - handing the area over to the US Marines. Ben Anderson, who was with the British forces in 2007, returns to see if the Americans are faring any better. His remarkable film follows Lima Company, a unit of the US Marines, as they dodge improvised bombs and struggle to reclaim the same territory the British previously occupied. As the war enters its tenth year, with Sangin still far from secure, real questions remain as to what so many British men died there for.

Junky spirits of Kabul: Afghanistan world's narco plague epicenter

A US-based study has revealed even newborns in Afghanistan have morphine in their blood. Every year the production of opiates is growing, despite the billions of dollars spent by the international community to fight the country's narcotics machine. Heroin and opium are openly used even in the center of Kabul, while NATO says stopping all this is simply not its goal. I have to admit we thought Kabul would be rough, but what we witnessed there spread far beyond all expectations. With its combination of devastating living conditions, poor infrastructure and depressive atmosphere, Kabul made Benghazi feel like a tropical resort. They say back in the day Kabul was a beautiful, rich city with golden domes of mosques, green parks and alleys all around. But the next three decades of violence have surely left their scars. And if during the Soviet presence the city received new roads, schools, hospitals and apartment buildings, today, with the alliance, it seems Kabul is stuck in its own dimension. What is the true cost of the Afghanistan war? Narrated by Tony Benn. Music by Brian Eno.

Britain is spending tens of billions waging the unjustified war in Afghanistan, with horrific costs in the deaths of thousands of Afghan civilians, and of soldiers sent to kill and be killed. This video, narrated by Tony Benn with music by Brian Eno, dramatically conveys the cost of wars which are opposed by most people in Britain. It ends with a call to join the Antiwar Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square on 8 October: www.antiwarassembly.org

10 Years of Operations in Afghanistan

A new video made by the Ministry of Defence from footage from the last ten years tells the history of operations in Afghanistan and explains why we are there, what progress has been made, and how British service personnel are preparing to hand over control to the Afghans in 2015. Ten years ago, British service personnel first went into Afghanistan as part of what was then called Operation Enduring Freedom. The new video starts with the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001 and takes viewers up to the present day, looking towards 2015 when the UK will no longer be involved in combat operations.

UN finds 'systematic' torture in Afghanistan

A United Nations report has found "compelling evidence" that Afghan intelligence officials at five detention centres "systematically tortured detainees for the purpose of obtaining confessions and information". In the report published on Monday, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said torture was practised systematically in some Afghan intelligence detention centres and children were among those who had suffered. The report singled out National Directorate Security (NDS) facilities in the provinces of Herat, Kandahar, Khost and Laghman, as well as the national headquarters of the NDS counter-terrorism department in Kabul, the Afghan capital. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports.
