Will it allow Israel to continue its occupation, the only occupation in the world? Will it allow Israel to remain a State above the law and accountability? Will it allow Israel to continue rejecting the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations and the International Court of Justice and the positions of the overwhelming majority of countries in the world?" "I would like to inform you that, before delivering this statement, I, in my capacity as President of the State of Palestine and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, submitted to HE Mr. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, an application for the admission of Palestine on the basis of the 4 June 1967 borders, with AI-Quds AI-Sharif as its capital, as a full member of the United Nations."

West Bank Euphoria: Abbas a hero despite looming US veto

History was made this week at the UN as President Mahmoud Abbas delivered the Palestinian bid for statehood and received a standing ovation as he addressed the General Assembly. Cheering crowds gathered in Ramallah to give him a hero's welcome as he arrived from New York. Addressing the rally he declared the beginning of the Palestinian spring. When he spoke to the UN assembly on Friday jubilant scenes played out across the Palestinian territories. But words quickly turned to violence on the West Bank border, culminating in clashes between police and Palestinians. RT's Paula Slier has the story. To discuss this story RT joined live from Ramallah by political activist Noor Odeh. RT on Twitter: twitter.com RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com

Abbas applies for UN recognition of Palestine

www.euronews.net The Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas has formally presented a request for the United Nations to recognise Palestine as a sovereign state. The US has promised to veto the move which it sees as counterproductive. Abbas' appeal reflects a loss of faith in the peace process, which despite 20 years of talks, has led to no let-up in Israeli settlement building on land the Palestinians consider theirs.

Abbas to Proceed with UN Membership

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday that he will proceed with plans to seek full UN membership for a Palestinian state at the UN headquarters. This meeting followed a meeting held at the UN with Members of a donor support group for the Palestinians, including senior Israeli and Palestinian leaders discussing the Palestinian Authority's efforts to build state institutions. According to presidential advisor, Nabil Abu Rdaineh Abbas plans to ask for a Security Council vote on Palestinian membership regardless of the certainty of a US veto. The Secretary General told Abbas he would "perform his duties under the UN charter," and called for the Israelis and the Palestinians to resume negotiations. Abbas had earlier said that "hell has broken out" over Palestine's statehood bid, and later realized it may carry risks for his Palestinian Authority which relies on international financial aid for survival in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Both the US and Israel have requested the resumption of the peace process but restricted it to "a bilateral dialogue" to be managed in Washington. However for almost two decades since the Oslo Accords in 1993, dialogue has not wielded results which pushed the Palestinian leadership towards the UN membership demand. The Palestinian president said that he will present the Security Council with his application on Friday. With a US veto looming at the Security Council, the Palestinians have said they ...

Abbas says no to Jewish state

The Palestinian Authority refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish State Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said adding he will continue with the statehood bid. "Don't order us to recognize a Jewish state, we won't accept it," Abbas told Palestinian officials in Ramallah in response to international demands that he forego the statehood bid and recognize Israel. The statehood bid in the United Nations next month is not aimed at isolating Israel or causing conflict with the United States he said. Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman blasted Abbas statements and said they "reveal the true nature of the September motion. A Palestinian state comes in place of a Jewish state," he said. The goal of the Palestinians is to obtain recognition of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty on the territories occupied since 1967, and obtain full membership in the United Nations," Abbas said.

Mahmoud Abbas asks UN for statehood so that Palestine can become a full member of the United Nations. This would end the occupation and mass murder that Israel has been exacting upon the Palestinian people as they seek to merge Palestine with Israel by force and terror. Abbas says statehood bid irreversible

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas insists efforts to win UN recognition for a Palestinian state are irreversible and the move has wide international support. Speaking to editors in Cairo on Wednesday, Abbas said so far 126 countries back the Palestinian initiative. Once a Palestinian state is recognized it will strengthen the negotiating position with Israel, he said. Abbas later met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Cairo to discuss the statehood bid. Abbas has ign ored US calls to embark on direct negotiations with Israel and pull out of the statehood bid. However Nimmer Hammad, a senior Palestinian official declared that Abbas will agree to return to the negotiating table if Israel agrees to one of two conditions -- a halt to all settlement construction or announce the establishment of a Palestinian state will be based on 1967 lines.

Abbas Seeks Full UN Membership

On July 27, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas called for peaceful "popular resistance" against Israeli occupation to backside a diplomatic offensive at the United Nations. Mr. Abbas was addressing the Palestine Liberation Organization during which he restated his resolution to seek full UN membership for a state of Palestine alongside Israel, a diplomatic move resulting from paralysis in the US-backed peace process. While Palestinian officials expect the United States to block their attempt to gain a full seat, the Palestinians anticipate winning enough support at September's General Assembly and securing a status upgrade. Palestine currently has the status of an observer. Mahmoud Abbas said, "Every day, we face what induces us to carry out popular resistance on a wide scale and not in one place, and not by one group, If we really want this let's do it. I insist on popular resistance and I insist that it be unarmed popular resistance" Palestinian officials are describing the diplomatic initiative as part of a new approach in their struggle to create an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital. An Israeli military commander said last week Israel would reinforce its border defenses in anticipation of such protests. Euronews spoke with Abbas during his recent visit to further his cause in Brussels. Charles Salamé, euronews: "Mr President, if we could begin with a word about Palestine joining UNESCO."

Abbas UN speech seen as inflammatory in Israel Part 1

Israelis reacted coolly on Friday to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's UN quest for statehood, and some said his impassioned speech at the United Nations had only harmed the chances of peace. Telling the UN General Assembly he wanted peaceful relations with Israel, Abbas painted a bleak picture of life for ordinary Palestinians under occupation. Israeli analysts said his words would not create an environment of trust conducive to fruitful negotiations. "He blamed Israel for all the Palestinian problems and it showed that bilateral talks now cannot be resumed," said Uzi Rabi, a professor at Tel Aviv University and a Middle East analyst. Abbas says he has beaten a unilateral path to the United Nations after two decades of failed peace talks brokered by Washington, which is increasingly seen by Palestinians as overwhelmingly pro-Israeli. The United States has made clear it will veto any Palestinian statehood resolution in the Security Council and Israeli analysts have said that independence can come only through difficult direct negotiations, not UN maneuvers. "This was a PR exercise which was all very nice. (Abbas) will get a few days of applause but eventually he will have to negotiate with us," said Alan Baker, an Israeli former peace negotiator and ex-ambassador. "This speech changes nothing ... but it directed a lot of hostility at Israel and won't add to the confidence of the average Israeli in the possibility of making an accord."
