1948 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine

FOR SALE: 1948 cadillac fleetwood limousine CAR HISTORY: Elegant Touch Limousine Service purchased this 1948 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine in 2001. The information found on the car was that there were 75 of these cars built in 1948, and of the time of our search, only 25 were still in existence. The vehicle was manufactured for Wadsworth Funeral Home in Framingham MA. The initials WFH are etched inside the gas cap. A prior owner of the vehicle was O'Neill Limousine Service (Brian O'Neill). O'Neill was a member of the Movie Stars Vehicle Group. We were told the vehicle was used by Vaughn Monroe when he was performing at The Meadows in Framingham on Route 9, now the location of the Meadows office building. One of Vaughn's biggest hits was "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow." www.youtube.com We were also told Lucille Ball used the car when performing in the Boston area, though this information has not yet been finalized. Elegant Touch Limousine Service has used the vehicle for weddings, proms, and anniversaries, etc. You may view photographs at our Facebook page at www.facebook.com
Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzgerald - Dream A Little Dream Of Me

For Wendy.... Louis Daniel Armstrong (August 4, 1901 -- July 6, 1971) nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 -- June 15, 1996), also known as the "First Lady of Song" and "Lady Ella," was an American jazz and song vocalist. "Dream a Little Dream of Me" is a song with music by Fabian Andre and Wilbur Schwandt and lyrics by Gus Kahn. "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was recorded by Ozzie Nelson and his Orchestra with vocal by Nelson on February 16, 1931 for Brunswick Records. That February 18, Wayne King and His Orchestra with vocal by Ernie Birchill recorded the song for Victor Records. "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was also an early signature tune of Kate Smith. In the summer of 1950 seven recordings of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" were in release with the versions by Frankie Laine and Jack Owens reaching the US Top 20 at respectively #18 and #14: the other versions were by Cathy Mastice, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Jordan, Vaughn Monroe, Dinah Shore and a duet version by Bing Crosby and Georgia Gibbs. Other traditional pop acts to record "Dream a Little Dream of Me" include Barbara Carroll, Nat King Cole, Doris Day, Joni James, and Dean Martin.

Frank Sinatra - Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! (1957)

"Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!", also known as "Let It Snow", is a song written by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne in 1945. It was written in July 1945 in Hollywood, California during one of the hottest days on record. First recorded by Vaughn Monroe, it became a popular hit, reaching number one on the Billboard music chart the following year. Due to its seasonal lyrics, it is commonly regarded as a Christmas song. Yet despite its cheery, holiday feel, it is a love song that never mentions Christmas.
The Chordettes - Mr. Sandman

PLEASE NOTE: I divided my uploads between multiple channels, Bookmark this link in your browser for instant access to an index with links to all of John1948's oldies classics. LINK: tinyurl.com The Chordettes were one of the longest-lived vocal groups with roots in the mainstream pop and vocal harmonies of the 1940s and early 1950s. Although the four women's arrangements owed more to the Andrews Sisters than doo wop, they did, unlike many of their peers, prove fairly adaptable to the rock era. First establishing themselves with the huge (and non-rock) pop hit "Mr. Sandman" in 1954, they continued to chart in the last half of the 1950s and the early 1960s, often with covers of rock and R&B songs. The #2 1958 hit "Lollipop" was the biggest of these. Although the group sound (at least in retrospect) among the Whitest and squarest of rock artists, they introduced enough rock into their repertoire and production to sound more contemporary than they had on discs such as "Mr. Sandman." Jinny Osborn was exposed to harmony singing via her father, who was president of "The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America Inc." She formed the quartet with three college friends, and they became regulars on Arthur Godfrey's television show for four years in 1949, singing a cappella in the barbershop style, and recording for Columbia. Godfrey's musical director, Archie Bleyer, married the Chordettes' bass singer, Janet Ertel, around the same time ...
Eddy Arnold - Texarkana Baby ~ 1st. 45rpm March 1949

45rpm records have been around now for 61 years. The 45rpm record was initially introduced in 1949 by RCA Records as a smaller, more durable replacement for the heavy 78 shellac-based records of the time. The 45 was created by RCA as a competitive move against one their rival record companies, Columbia, which had just introduced the new microgroove 33 1/3 rpm LP. The number 45 came from taking 78 and subtracting Columbia's new 33 to equal the 45. Record companies and consumers alike faced an uncertain future as to which format would survive the 78rpm or the 45rpm; in what was known as the "War of the Speeds." In 1949 Capitol and Decca started issuing the new LP format and RCA relented and issued its first LP in January 1950. But the 45 rpm was gaining in popularity and Columbia issued its first 45s in February 1951. Soon other record companies saw the mass consumer appeal the new format allowed and by 1954 more than 200 million 45s had been sold. On March 31, 1949, RCA Victor released "Texarkana Baby" b/w "Bouquet of Roses" by Eddy Arnold. The first 45 to hit the Billboard charts was "A -- You're Adorable" by Perry Como, listed on the charts on May 7, 1949. The next week, the year's biggest hit appeared on the Billboard charts -- "Riders In The Sky (A Cowboy Legend)" by Vaughn Monroe. The first 45rpm records were monaural and as stereo sound became more prevalent and popular in the 1960s, almost all 45rpm records were manufactured in stereo. Read more: www.justpressplay.net

(Ghost) Riders in the Sky -- the Song and the Movie

This song is actually "Riders in the Sky", the "ghost riders" being lyrics but not part of the title. It was written in 1948 by Stan Jones, and was first recorded in 1949 by folk master Burl Ives in a version that remains one of the best. Just a month later, "Riders" was recorded by Vaughn Monroe and his orchestra in a hugely successful rendition which removed the song from the realm of western music into the popular realm. It was recorded by everybody and his brother and sister (over 50 performers to date). Classic western music doesn't take well to improvisation, a fact either unknown or ignored by many otherwise fine singers who have managed to butcher their "Riders" attempts. Notable performances that are essentially true to the straightforward western-legend nature of the song are Burl Ives original version (but not a later one), The Sons of the Pioneers (featured here), Frankie Laine (outstanding), Marty Robbins (outstanding), and Gene Autry (true but remarkably lifeless performance considering his western roots and experience). Johnnie Cash gave it a new life for a new generation. I wish that Willie Nelson had pursued "Riders" during his "Red-Headed Stranger" period. The scenes portrayed are from the 1949 movie "Riders in the Sky", rushed onto film in 1949 by Gene Autry and Armand Schaefer for Columbia Pictures. It appears that the "Riders" sequence was inserted into the midst of an existing story, to give Autry the opportunity to sing the tremendously popular song ...

Thanks Johnny for reminding me of this great song! This song is from the movie Paint Your Wagon starring Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin. (I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood! Not just the actor and director, but the singer as well!) Anyway, in the film, this song is sung by Harve Presnell. This was the song that stood out for me. There have been many versions of this beautiful tune, some I really like - Sam Cooke's, The Browns' and Frankie Laine's. But Presnell's version is the best for me. I hope you all like my rendition too.

There I've Said It Again

"There! I've Said It Again" is a popular song written by Redd Evans and David Mann popularized originally by Vaughn Monroe in 1945, and then again in late 1963 by Bobby Vinton. Vinton's version topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart on January 4, 1964 and remained there for four weeks. The song is significant because it marks a sort of dividing line between the "innocent years" of the Rock and Roll era, and the modern rock period - more specifically, it was the last song to reach number one on the Hot 100 before "I Want to Hold Your Hand" by The Beatles topped the chart, an event that would change the direction of popular music. Ironically, Vinton would be one of only a few artists to continue chart success after the advent of Beatlemania.[1] The song also spent five weeks atop the easy listening chart. It was Vinton's third number-one song on both charts, following "Roses Are Red (My Love)" and "Blue Velvet".

"The Very Thought of You" is a Jazz standard published in 1934, with music and lyrics by Ray Noble. In addition to Noble's own hit recording of the song with his orchestra, featuring the vocals of Al Bowlly, there was also a popular version recorded that same year by Bing Crosby. A decade later, the song was on the charts again in a version by Vaughn Monroe. Doris Day sang the song in the 1950 movie Young Man with a Horn, a fictional tale partly based on the life of early jazz trumpeter Bix Beiderbecke. An instrumental version of the song is featured in the movie Casablanca and is played in Rick Blaine's club in the scene where Sascha kisses Rick Blaine on the cheek just before Ilse Lund and Victor Lazlo enter the enter Rick's for the first time.

NAPPTURAL HAIR

Don Imus called the Rutgers basketball team "nappy headed ho's" and this racist/sexist remark revealed, among other things, Mr. Imus' deployment of Western standards of beauty to legitimize his televised ridicule of African-American hair style and hair texture. This short documentary, however, is not about Don Imus per se. Rather this film is based on the assumption that all societal notions of beauty are socially constructed and ,therefore, they can be contested, scrutinized, undermined, subverted, challenged, reformulated and recalibrated to better reflect the black and brown faces of the American melting pot. From permed hair to afros, braids, corn rows and dred locks, this short documentary hopes to stimulate more inter-racial discussions about the aesthetics and politics of African-American hair style and hair texture. In terms of ideological framework , this short film practices the concept of reflexivity of Jewish Soviet filmmaker Academy-Awards Dziga Vertov (Denis Kaufman) in his 1929 documentary MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA sharing his belief that dialectically exposing the audience to the physical presence of the camera apparatus, unconventional editing and the camera operator vis a vis continuity editing (eg master shot discipline, separation shots, parallel action, multi-angularity, familiar image, moving camera, slow disclosure, orchestration,) demystifies the glamour and magic of film in order offer a socialist decoding of society.
