Coney Island of the 1940's

Coney Island, "the place where merriment is king!" Take a trip back in time 50 years before the Mermaid Parade. See masses of old school New Yorkers beat the heat by hitting the beach. See Side Shows! Carnies! Freaks! Thrill rides! Includes the original Coney Island Hot Dog, the Bathing Girl Review, and people getting sick on rides. Not to mention the Tiger Rag, if 1940's Coney Island existed today an insurance agent would have a field day. Still, 1940's Coney Island kicks the ass of most modern amusement parks any day. (This film is forever dedicated to artist and Coney Island mermaid Mary Karam. She is greatly loved and will be sorely missed. - Sept 19, 2009.) See more at: www.weirdovideo.com

1940s Faux Bangs

My second ever vintage hair tutorial, this time it's 40s style faux / bumper bangs! Not quite as big as Dita von Teese's (or her icon Carmen Miranda) but better for those not quite as brave! It could also work for a 50s, Bettie Page style look and it's a perfect pinup girl style. Look out for the comedy fumble at the beginning! If you have any questions, please just ask. I'll be posting this on my blog, do check it out for more 40s fashion and style tips: www.diaryofavintagegirl.com

The Trip, 1940's chevrolet car commercial vivid Technicolour

www.myxboxhacks.com In this 1939 short, a suburban California family gets all dressed up to drive their new 1940 Chevrolet to see grandma and grandpa, who still live on the family farm. Dad's in a suit and tie, and Mom has on a dressy dress and chic hat. Are they dressed up to go see the grandparents or are they dressed up to ride in their new Chevrolet? They pack their expensive looking luggage in the trunk This family has money to spend. When we think of the 1930's and families on the road, we're more likely to think of the old Model T in "The Grapes of Wrath" than of this affluent nuclear family. Is this image pure fantasy, or was America truly coming out of the Depression in 1939? The announcer mentions the car's"utmost economy" but that's not the real message of the ad. The Chevrolet symbolizes comfort (the kids asleep in the back seat), glamour, conspicuous consumption and personal mobility. The farm is another affluent place from what we see of it. Grandma and Grandpa sure don't resemble WPA photographs of dustbowl farmers, although who knows? Americans wanted to put the poverty and deprivation of the 30s behind them and this ad with its conspicuous display of wealth reflects that longing. i will upload videos soon to my upcoming site www.alchemygaming.com

Classic Movie Bloopers (1930s and 1940s)

thefilmarchive.org A blooper is a short sequence of a film or video production, usually a deleted scene, containing a mistake made by a member of the cast or crew. These bloopers, or outtakes as they are also called, are often the subject of television shows or are occasionally revealed during the credit sequence at the end of comedy movies. (Jackie Chan and Burt Reynolds are both famous for including such reels with the closing credits of their movies.) Humorous mistakes made by athletes are often referred to as bloopers as well, particularly in baseball. Prominent examples of films with bloopers include: A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Valiant, Cheaper By the Dozen, and Cheaper By the Dozen 2. One of the earliest known bloopers is attributed to 1930s radio broadcaster Harry Von Zell, who accidentally referred to then-US President Herbert Hoover as "Hoobert Heever" during an introduction. Reportedly it was upon hearing of this mistake that Kermit Schafer was inspired to begin collecting bloopers, although the exact circumstances of the event have been debated. A similar situation occurred decades later when then-new president Gerald Ford was introduced as "Gerald Smith", the same name as an American Fascist leader from the 1930s. One famous out-take from Australian television is from the gameshow Who Dares Wins, hosted by former cricketer Mike Whitney. The scene involved Whitney introducing a challenge by throwing a water balloon from hand to hand and <b>...</b>

1940's Hair-Reverse Victory Rolls

Tutorial for a key style of the 1940's, the victory roll. Once you master the roll (take some time and be patient), you can try alternate versions of the look by aiming the roll backwards instead of up so it looks like it's laying flat against your head, doing just one and leaving the other side loose, etc. Add flowers (like the Vargas print at the beginning) or other accessories...most of all, have fun!

Vintage 1940's makeup tutorial

vintagemakeupguide.com Buy Besame vintage 1940's Makeup here; www.besamecosmetics.com 1940's Makeup Film - Face contouring / Lipstick and Hairlines Archive Tutorial Film presented by Miss Ratherly Stern. The ideal facial contour is supposed to be the oval. But some of us have round faces, square faces or long faces. What can we do to make our faces appear more oval ? 1.Round Faces: Don't wear too high a neck line. It shortens the neck and increases the effect of roundness! Hair well off the forehead and flat against the temple ! Thin lipsticks, correctly applied to follow the natural mouthline ! AV neck completes the picture and gives the impression of a little more neck length to give the impression of an oval face! 2.Square Faces: Keep away from haircuts that hang in vertical lines near the side of the face and jawline in.This over empasisies the squareness of the jaw.Avoid straight horizontal lines near the face - like thin lips / round or high horizontal necks. Fill out the lower lip with your lipstick. Hair should fall in curves around the jawline. Wear a V neck line to pull the attention down from jaw. Pure logic when you think about it. 3.The Long / Narrow Face. Don't wear V necks - This adds to the impression of length. Avoid Piled up high hair on top of head as this also adds to the length of the face. Hair should be off the top if the head and fluffed out at the sides to give the thin face added width. Finally a high neck line or choke distracts from the long neck <b>...</b>

1940s Victory Rolls!

I've kept you waiting... and waiting... and waiting... but here it is! My all-singing, all-dancing (not really) victory rolls hair tutorial! This is for the scores of gals who has asked me for instructions on this most classic of vintage hairstyles. This is sadly not the best pair of rolls I've ever done... a bit 'pointy' at the top... but it's good enough for this! Victory rolls were hugely popular in the 1940s, seen on Betty Grable and other stars, as well as girls on the street. This is nothing more than the guide to how I do it on myself and others, it's a technique that works for me. Any questions, do leave them here (or comment on my blog, where it will be posted very soon). The link to my blog is thus: www.diaryofavintagegirl.com Hurrah!

1940s AURORATONE (Restored!) featuring Bing Crosby

(Restored in HD!) This is an AURORATONE produced and created by British filmmaker Cecil Stokes for use in the treatment of mental disorders - definitely a kinder, gentler alternative to the electric-shock treatments which were then in vogue! The soundtrack features Bing Crosby and organist Eddie Dunstedter. An online biography of Bing Crosby notes that he was a shareholder in Mr. Stokes' "Auroratone Foundation." It also notes that Mr. Crosby made exclusive recordings of "Ave Maria," "Home on the Range," and "When You Wish Upon a Star," for Auroratones, but there's no mention of this film's soundtrack "When the Organ Played Oh Promise Me." It's possible that Mr. Stokes used a recording that Bing and Mr. Dunstedter had made several years earlier. This 16mm film print belonged to my grandfather, Gustave Martens of College Point, NY. He probably acquired it during the time he worked as a film projectionist at various psychiatric institutions in the New York-New Jersey area during the 1940's. Only once, during the 1960s, did Grandpa show the movie to us kids, and as you would expect we didn't know what to make of it. We asked him "What's this weird stuff, Grandpa?" and he himself wasn't sure! In 2007 I put on YouTube an inferior, low-resolution video of the film and, still not knowing what it was, gave it the best descriptive title I could think of: "Psychedelic Bing Crosby Video". Many of the comments it received were along the lines of "What was Bing smoking in that pipe <b>...</b>
