I made this video to help people choose and maintain a good used (even new as sometimes they have issues too) 12 string acoustic guitar. Most salespeople won't tell you any of this stuff...some don't know it, some won't take the time, some are trying to sell you a guitar with issues...sales in most stores is just a numbers game...sell the most at the most profit...few take the time to actually listen to what the customer wants (and can afford) and focus only on what they have and what makes the most for them. When I first became interested (ok, obsessed) with playing the guitar, my parents were not too keen on the idea for fear I would turn into some kind of long-haired burnout (maybe they were right, since I did eventually flirt with long-hair, and some degree of burnout status, in my college years.) I bought my first guitar, a steel-string, acoustic Palmer, with money I earned mowing the lawn. But, the guitar had terribly high action. And, despite my parents springing for a few lessons at the local music shop, I really didn't make any progress for the first year or so. I remember my Dad good-naturedly ribbing me as the guitar sat gathering dust in my room. In junior high, I had the opportunity to choose some elective classes -- one of the options was Beginner Guitar. But, my Mom had other ideas -- and I ended up in Intermediate Piano (I had taken piano lessons for a few years.) But, lo and behold, I showed up on the first day of Intermediate Piano and the teacher said a few magic words that probably changed the course of my life -- "Intermediate Piano is full, would anyone like to volunteer for Beginner Guitar?" My hand shot up like a bolt. The guitars provided in Beginner Guitar had nylon-strings, so they were much easier to play than my Palmer. Some Saturday afternoon noodling on my '89 Fender Strat XII 12-string, (very) loosely based on "Born Under A Bad Sign." I kind of messed up the slide bit, but hey, it's just noodling plus the guitar has .008's on it. The guitar is stock except for adding the bridge pickup to the second tone control, a CRL switch (stock one was shorting), and Dunlop strap locks. It's strung with .008-.040 Ernie Ball Slinkies in dropped-D tuning. I'm playing it through a Boss CS-3, Boss OD-3, and Line 6 Verbzilla set to function as an echo. The amp is a solid state Fender Frontman 212R.

This is one of my favorite tunes by Al Petteway. Someone always seem to request it at Jam Sessions. I've been growing my nails back out recently and they are just barely long enough to play this tune. I had to be careful not to dig in too much. I can't imagine doing this tune without a thumbpick. I played this on my small bodied cutaway Lowden. It has a nice tight bass register that works well for this tune. As always, DADGAD tuned down a step.
