His pioneering status and outstanding achievements have led to him being referred to as the "Godfather of Canadian hip hop". In 1989 he became the first Canadian rapper to have a Top 40 hit, "Let Your Backbone Slide". As of early 2008, "Let Your Backbone Slide" remained the best-selling Canadian hip hop single of all time, and the only certified gold single in Canadian hip hop history. Eighteen years after its release, Maestro's debut album, Symphony in Effect (1989), remains the top selling Canadian hip hop album of all time; at 190000 units sold, it is 10000 shy of double platinum. On Maestro's song/video "Nothing at All" (Black Tie Affair, 1991), he acknowledges this feat, rapping: "My first album, symphony in effect went platinum/ in Canada that made me the first Black one/ to achieve that goal, I even got offered a movie role. Hunh, I turned it down, I didn't wanna be no star portrayin' a nigga that dwelled behind bars..." After the success of his 1991 album, The Black Tie Affair, Maestro's career faltered as he attempted to break into the United States market. When three emcees from Toronto get together to collaborate on a track for the love of hip hop, only goodness can come out of it. In 2010, when Dan-eo was visiting Kish in LA, the two were taking about future collaboration projects. While reminiscing about their favourite old school tracks, and memories of Concert Hall shows, Kish suggested to Dan-eo that they do a cover of Biz Markie's "Vapors". After reconnecting with Maestro while he was in LA, Kish had found the perfect third emcee to round out the track. The only missing piece was a DJ. Maestro suggested his sister, DJ MelBoogie, and the rest was hip hop history. This project was done out of love for the music, but even more that that, the track marked some firsts for this team: "Vapors 2012" is the first collaboration between Maestro and Dan-eo, along with being the first collaboration between Wes and his sister MelBoogie. For Kish, this was only the second song he'd recorded after a 15 year hiatus. To compliment the song, Kish asked phenomenal artist, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway, who did character design for the animated "Spider-man" series, to create some artwork to accompany the release.
