Dag Nasty: All Ages Show

Band: Dag Nasty CD: Field Day (1988) Song: All Ages Show This is without question one of the absolute best Dag Nasty songs, and it has one of the catchiest guitar riffs I've ever heard. Peter Cortner is singing on this one, not Dave Smalley. Field Day was evidently a controversial album, but this song is not one of the experimental tracks. I think everyone can enjoy this... regardless of age (yeah, I went there). Lyrics From www.daghouse.com: I understand you you've got a problem now understand me it's your problem not mine to find a reason, don't ask me don't ask (anyone) for a reason to live your life shake your head, left and right like the old man who shows up here every night what does he hear in this kind of music? why don't you ask him? find out what you need to know all ages show you haven't lived all there is to live how old is old? how old is old? all ages show I get the feeling that I've heard all this before I spoke your words, I felt your feelings but when I reached a dead end, I knew there was more I guess I'm just too young to see it but I've shorn* up some people a little bit older and they say the problems keep coming but reasons to keep on trying keep growing and they grow and they grow and they grow all ages show (* shorn = "slept with")

Dag Nasty: Justification

Band: Dag Nasty Album: Can I Say (1986) Song: Justification Another one of my favorite songs that I've found is not available elsewhere on Youtube in its original form. I'd try and add lyrics or something to these videos, but I just suck too much at it, and I'm sure you'd rather hear the song and surf another website at the same time anyway. Check out some of my other videos if you like this one; maybe you'll discover something you like. Lyrics (taken from www.daghouse.com ): We have tried and failed we have stumbled and fallen we have tried a new taste and spit it back out we have taken a left turn when we meant to turn right we lost sight of our origins but our past never lost sight of us it's not emulation - cause that's not this hard not imitation - cause that won't take you far not digression - cause I'm falling straight up it is progression - I'm not afraid to stand up I don't know what is expected but I expected it to be great I said "I'm trying my hardest" but he didn't like the tape take a look at what you're doing and tell me I'm too late you say we're walking backwards well, that dead horse sure can run the truth I know I can I know I will I know -I know what I have to do and now you'll listen and I hope it won't hurt I've seen your poison you've done your worst I've seen your better and I can't believe it's true you've lost the truth that used to live inside of you

DAG NASTY - The Godfather

Wig Out at Denko's LP (Dischord Records, 1987). Dag Nasty was a Washington DC punk band formed in 1985 by guitarist Brian Baker of Minor Threat, drummer Colin Sears and bassist Roger Marbury, both of Bloody Mannequin Orchestra, and vocalist Shawn Brown later of Swiz and Jesuseater. Their style of less aggressive, melodic hardcore was influential to emocore, as well as post-hardcore.[1] Shawn Brown was the first vocalist with whom the band recorded (until recently) unreleased versions of most of the material that later made up their first release Can I Say, which featured former roadie and new singer Dave Smalley of DYS. Dave left the band to attend school in Israel before a summer tour with the Descendents. A new singer, Peter Cortner, was found after the band placed an ad in a local paper and the tour was kept. After touring half the US opening for the Descendents, the band went home and recorded new material that wasn't released until years later. After a few more local shows, the band broke up in the fall of 1986. Brian went to LA to start a new band with Doug Carrion and half of Doggie Style called Doggie Rock. After releasing one album under the Doggie Style name, Doggie Rock broke up and Brian reformed Dag Nasty in early 1987 with Peter, Colin and Doug replacing Roger Marbury, who declined to rejoin. Months later, the band recorded and released Wig Out at Denko's, including rerecorded versions of the late 86' tape and new material. 1988 saw the release of their ...

Although the group was more accessible and melodic than Minor Threat, they never lost their bracing, blistering edge. Formed by former-Minor Threat and Meatmen guitarist Brian Baker and ex-DYS vocalist Dave Smalley, Dag Nasty recorded their first album, Can I Say (1986), with DC-punk guru Ian MacKaye assisting on the production. The following year, Smalley left the group; he was replaced by Peter Cortner, who added more pop elements to the band's sound. Dag Nasty moved from MacKaye's Dischord label to Giant in 1988, releasing their last album, Field Day. Along with former-Big Boy Chris Gates, Baker formed the metal band Junkyard in 1989, which released two records on Geffen before fading away. Dag Nasty came back together in 1992, releasing Four on the Floor for the growing underground punk scene that was only a few short years from breaking into the mainstream. The response was enthusiastic, but the band stepped away from the business again. Ten years later, they reunited with the emo rock call-to-arms Minority of One and released it on Revelation Records.

Dag Nasty - Going Down/"Four On The Floor" 1992 Lyrics: We're going down Looking around this place Man I've got to get out of here All those people here are crazy (gonna drive me nuts) Looking at their race I never wanted to be in Where's the door, just get me out of here We're going down We're going down and out yeah down and out Looking at all these cars Now they're blocking my escape LA freeway , never free no way 15 miles an hour The Clash tape up past ten Ten more minutes and I can breathe again "Do it right" - but how can I? When I'm not even given the chance To correct The mistakes I've already made So hard to answer questions When I don't even know what they are How can they expect me to try things their way?

Lyrics: One for all Nothing for one And the more on your side The better for them They taught you your place I can't even see your face I don't understand And i can't accept that you feel safer blending in with the rest And it think it's sad That i should have to ask Am i safe? If i don't want to be with you Did your new friends take the time to tell you what they're trying to prove For the first time in your life people are afraid of you And it makes me so mad That i should have to ask Am i safe?

Dag Nasty - Dag Nasty Live / Trenton, NJ 1988 / City Gardens

Dag Nasty the band and the song, live at City Gardens in Trenton, NJ 1988. Part of the Live...Suburbia! 28 songs and 28 stories mix. Dag Nasty - Dag Nasty "You have Can I Say but not Wig Out?" questioned an older punk rocker in my freshman art class named Dave, "...here...just take this now and give it back to me in a few days". He pilfered through his black pack pack adorned with pins from Newbury Comics of various punk and hardcore bands before handing me a black cassette tape with a yellow squiggle on the cover. The band photos looked mature and remotely professional not aggressive and innocent. "Let's wig out at Denko's...on coke and Doritos....malt liquor on a Minor Threat sticker" I read aloud slightly confused as Dave worked on a paper mache sculpture of himself pissing on the school. He used a piece of yellow yarn for the pee stream that was splashing on our school's mascot, a blue devil. "Will you fucking relax?" he replied. School bus rides were a mix of dread, relief, anxiety and nausea. The piercing laughs of adolescent girls, flying lunch bags, books smashing the knuckles of unsuspecting nerds and some mustached lesbian with mirrored glasses navigating and hitting every inconsistency in the pavement. My ride home with Peter Cortner and Dag Nasty was marked with a completely new feeling that was equally tense and familiar. The thrash beats of Can I Say often reminiscent of Minor Threat were less prominent and Corner's vocals were slightly off key in a ...

Field Day (Giant Records, 1988) Music and lyrics by Peter Cortner. Sitting here like forty ounces waiting to be drunk I always seem to want what I don't want it's more than I can handle still I want another shot even without it , five minutes from now I'll find I can't stand up on the edge , I've been there and it's just as crowded as back home though the waves are strong it's easy enough to swim on back to the shore sometimes , couldn't my eyes just stay at home ? 'cause sometimes seeing doesn't see me through someday maybe someday couldn't we take all our mirrors down 'cause sometimes seeing doesn't see me through I'd love to believe you when I say always and all ways :) but from what I've seen you can't see me through there's a question in your head though you're thinking " not this time" don't be afraid to ask don't be afraid to care

An obviously nervous Dave Smalley performs "Circles" during his first show with the band, and speculates on the subject of a Dischord EP that never happened. Outtake from the Can I Say? re-release bonus tracks - that disc included four songs from this show, and with the three I've uploaded here, that only leaves "Can I Say?", "What Now?" and "Thin Lines" (none of which is an especially great performance). Recorded on February 6, 1986 at the Electric Banana in Philadelphia, PA. Photo from the Wig Out At Denko's inlay.
